INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Owen Wagoner of the Samford University track & field team was announced by the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee as one of 58 recipients to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
Wagoner was a standout competitor in the pole vault event for the Bulldogs over his career as a student-athlete. The Fort Wayne, Indiana native earned two Southern Conference Outdoor Championships in the event with one in 2012 and the other in 2014 when he helped the Samford men earn its first SoCon Outdoor Track & Field Championship.
His academic achievements, campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership over his time at Samford helped him achieve this scholarship.
"I have to thank Samford, the administration, the athletic department and especially my coaches." Wagoner stated. "Samford provided an environment for me to grow academically, socially and spiritually. Samford challenged me academically while understanding the rigors and challenges of being a student-athlete."
"I have been extremely blessed by God for the opportunities he has provided me." Wagoner continued. "I look forward to the challenges of graduate school but am confident being a Samford student-athlete has prepared me for what lies ahead."
Wagoner will enroll at Carnegie Mellon University located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and will study at the Heinz School of Information Systems & Management to pursue a Master's in Information Systems Management. He will be taking a global track program and will spend the first year studying abroad in Adelaide, Australia before returning to Pittsburgh.
In the end Wagoner plans to use his education in consulting for various businesses around the world.
"My career plan after graduation is to pursue a job in consulting in the area of information systems that will allow me to work with clients worldwide. I would ideally like to work with companies on how they utilize technology to accomplish their business strategy." Wagoner concluded.
