Soccer Adds Eight In Highly-Touted Signing Class

The Bulldogs sign Bonner, Borman, Copeland, Delp, Dubroc, Lourie, Meneide and Watford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University soccer team officially completed its 2016 signing class Friday as Head Coach Todd Yelton announced the addition of Erin Bonner, Keyli Borman, Lindsay Copeland, Lauren Delp, Mia Dubroc, Allie Lourie, Taylor Meneide and Miyah Watford to the Bulldogs' talent-laden roster for the 2016 fall campaign.

"I'm extremely excited about this group of players and I'm looking forward to working with them for the next four years," said Samford head coach Todd Yelton. "They are not only quality players but a great group of kids. I believe that several of these players have the potential to make an immediate impact on our team next season."

Erin Bonner comes to Samford from nearby Deatsville where she starred at Marbury High School under the tutelage of Leif Milliron. A big, goal-scoring forward, Bonner played a huge role at MHS and also competed for her club team, Birmingham United Soccer Association, which is a member of the Elite Clubs National League.

Bonner was honored to play in the prestigious 2015 Region III Championships held June 19-25, 2015.

"Erin is a strong, powerful attack-minded forward, who has a physical edge to her," said Yelton. "She is very good in and around the goal."

Keyli Borman will join the Bulldogs this fall from Georgetown, Kentucky, where she prepped at Scott County High School under the tutelage of Head Coach Jim Tussey. A three-time, first-team all-district performer, Borman earned all-district Most Valuable Player honors as both a sophomore and junior.

Additionally, she garnered first-team all-region accolades in her final three seasons of high school, while earning Second-Team All-Kentucky honors as a sophomore, junior and senior.

Borman, the younger sister of current Samford standout Taylor Borman, set the SCHS school record with 40 single-season goals as a sophomore. She was also named the team's MVP as both a junior and senior.

Prior to her senior year, Borman was named to the All-American Game Watch List after leading her prep team in goals for three straight seasons. After garnering the Coach's Award as a true freshman, she was also named a Team Captain as a junior and a senior.

Borman was named to the Top Drawer Soccer First-Team in Kentucky as a junior and finished all four years of high school with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.

"Keyli is much like her sister Taylor," Yelton said. "She's a hard-working, technically-gifted player who really likes to run at you with the ball. She also has the ability to combine well with others and puts herself in good spots in front of the goal."

Lindsay Copeland comes to Samford from Vestavia Hills High School where she starred under the direction of Head Coach Brigid Littleton. Copeland was ranked as the No. 2 player in the South by Top Drawer Soccer after earning Team Captain honors of her club team, Birmingham United Soccer Association, which is a member of the Elite Clubs National League.

At VHHS, Copeland was named to the Alabama All-Star Team, the tournament MVP of the state championship and a two-time All-Metro Birmingham performer. A four-year varsity member, Copeland was also named the team's Defensive MVP.

Copeland is a member of the National Honor Society and was named to the VHHS Honor Roll every semester of her prep career. She also finished in the top-12 percent of her senior class. Additionally, she was a member of the German Honor Society and closed out her high school years with a brilliant 4.27 GPA.

"Lindsay is tremendously athletic with great size and the ability to cover loads of ground on the park," Yelton said. "She hits great service and has the ability to start the attack from the back."

Lauren Delp, a native of Tallahassee, Florida, will join the Bulldogs this fall after competing at Lawton Chiles High School for Head Coach Lindsay Taylor. A four-year letterwinner at CHS, Delp received the school's prestigious Athletic Scholar Award every season of her prep career.

Delp also competed in one of the most highly-talented club leagues in the nation for the Florida Elite Soccer Academy.

"Lauren is a goalkeeper with great size and range," said Yelton. "She's a very hard-worker and knows how to command the box."

Mia Dubroc comes to Samford from Mandeville, Louisiana, where she prepped at Mandeville High School under the tutelage of Head Coach Sean Esker.

In 2013, Dubroc received the High School Freshmen All State 5A-Coaches Award, while MHS went on to reach the quarterfinals of the 2014 Division I Louisiana State Championships. She also earned All-State First-Team 5A and First-Team All-District Coaches Award in both 2014 and 2015. Dubrock closed out her high school career with a phenomenal 4.3 GPA.

In club soccer, Dubrock proved to be a top-five scorer in the 2014-15 U.S. Youth Soccer National League, while winning the 2015 Regional III Championship.

"Mia came to one of our camps and did really well," Yelton said. "We are excited about her ability in front of the goal, her tremendously high work rate, as well as her passion for the game."

Allie Laurie will join the Bulldogs this fall from the The Lovett School in Atlanta, Georgia, where she played under the guidance of coaches Will Lozier and Sarah Galante.

One of the most decorated athletes in The Lovett School history, Laurie earned the 10th grade Best Defensive Player award and was a member of the All-Georgia Second Team as a sophomore. As a junior, she garnered the varsity soccer MVP award and was named the school's Female Student Athlete of the Year. Laurie was also a member of the All-Georgia First Team in 2015.

During her time at The Lovett School, Laurie was named the Team Captain as both a junior and a senior, and helped the school reach the state championship finals twice.

Laurie's club team, Tophat 16 Gold, earned Georgia State Cup Championships in 2013, 2014 and 2015. They were also 2012 SPL champions, 2012 R3PL champions and regional semifinalists in 2014.

Additionally, Tophat 16 Gold earned four additional championship titles throughout 2013 and 2014, while advancing to the prestigious 2015 regional finals in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Laurie's team also advanced to the 2015 national championships in Little Rock, Arkansas.

"Allie is one of those special players who has tremendous vision," said Yelton. "She also has a fantastic engine and has the ability to unlock defenses with her passing."

Taylor Meneide comes to Samford from Marietta, Georgia, where she played her prep career at Pope High School under the direction of Head Coach Heath Green.

At PHS, Meneide was named the Offensive MVP as a sophomore and the Defensive MVP as a junior. She was also named the Team Captain in both her junior and seniors seasons.

Academically, Meneide earned the school's Scholar Award three times throughout her prep career as a freshman, sophomore and a junior. A highly-decorated athlete, Meneide was named first-team all-county and second-team all-region in 2015. She also earned second-team all-county honors in 2014.

Meneide competed in club soccer for Tophat SC and helped lift her squad to Disney Showcase Championship titles in both 2012 and 2013. Her team also won three straight Georgia State Cup titles in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Meneide's Tophat SC club squad advanced all the way to the regional finals in 2015.

"Taylor is an extremely technically gifted defender and makes good decisions with the ball," Yelton said. "She really likes to get up and down the flank."

Miyah Watford will join the Bulldogs this fall from Indianapolis, Indiana, where she starred at North Central High School under the direction of Head Coach Habib Diatta.

During her time at NCHS, Watford was named Third-Team All-Indiana in both 2012 and 2015, while earning the school's Best Offensive Player of the Year honors in each of the same seasons.

At the 2015 Kicks For Cancer Invitational, Watford earned All-Tournament accolades. She was also named to the All-MIC conference team and the all-county team in 2015. Watford was honored as the all-district player of the year in 2015. Her club team, FC Pride '99 Elite, earned Indiana State Cup championship titles in both 2012 and 2015.

"Miyah is a forward who has tremendous pace," Yelton said. "She constantly puts defenders on their back foot and has the ability to get in and behind the defense on a regular basis."

The Samford University soccer team concluded its 2015 campaign as regular-season Southern Conference champions and with a 14-5-1 overall record. The Bulldogs earned a momentous 2-1 victory over Wake Forest and posted an 8-1 record in conference play.

Samford finished the season with nine players earning All-SoCon honors and Yelton was named the SoCon Coach of the Year for a second straight year.

In 2016, the Bulldogs will return nine starters from this last year's championship squad. Samford will also boast an additional 11 returning letterwinners, as well as its highly-touted, eight-member recruiting class.

"This is a really balanced class from top to bottom," Yelton said. "It's a bunch of fantastic players who we're really looking forward to working with. This class has a ton of potential and can really improve throughout their time here at Samford. I think they are going to work hard and they are incredibly driven to continue the success of this program. We're really excited about this bunch."
