BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Samford cornerback
James Bradberry was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the second round of the 2016 National Football League Draft Friday evening.
Bradberry was taken with the 62
nd overall pick. He became the seventh player in Samford history to be selected in the NFL Draft.
This marks the fourth time in the last five seasons a Samford player was taken in the NFL Draft. Jaquiski Tartt was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Nick Williams was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the seventh round of the 2013 event, and Corey White was drafted in the fifth round by the New Orleans Saints in the 2012 Draft.
Prior to Tartt, Williams and White, Cortland Finnegan was taken in the seventh round of the 2006 Draft by the Tennessee Titans. Gary Fleming was selected in the seventh round of the 1969 Draft by the Baltimore Colts, and Rex Keeling was taken in the 16
th round by the Houston Oilers in 1967.
As a senior in 2015, Bradberry finished with 45 tackles, including 29 solo stops. He also recorded two interceptions, and was named to the third team of the STATS FCS All-America team, as well as being named first team All-SoCon at the conclusion of the season. He also became just the second player in Samford history to play in the prestigious Reese's Senior Bowl.
In 2014, Bradberry finished second on the team with two interceptions. He also had four pass break-ups, and he was responsible for 25 tackles, including 22 solo stops. At the conclusion of the 2014 season, Bradberry was named second team All-SoCon by the league's coaches.
As a sophomore in 2013, Bradberry had 26 tackles, two interceptions and 10 pass break-ups. The Pleasant Grove, Ala., native was also named second team All-SoCon by the coaches following the 2013 season.
In his first season in a Samford uniform in 2012, Bradberry had 32 tackles, two interceptions and two pass break-ups. Bradberry spent the 2011 season as a redshirt at Arkansas State, before transferring to Samford for the 2012 season.
For his four-year Samford career, Bradberry tallied 128 total tackles, including 90 solo stops. He has recorded eight interceptions, tallying two in each of his four seasons.
