Dowdy, Hanson, Brister Make NFCA All-Region Teams

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Just last season Samford softball received its first NFCA All-Region award as Megan Dowdy claimed a spot on the NFCA All-Region Third Team. This year on May 19, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association has announced that a total of three Bulldogs made this year's South All-Region teams.
Dowdy, now in her senior season, led the way receiving a spot on the NFCA All-Region First Team after having a stellar 2016 campaign. The Fairhope, Alabama native boasts a .399 batting average with a total of 81 hits. The more impressive of the statistics is that she leads nations in doubles (24) and doubles per game (.42) while maintaining one of the lowest strikeout percentages in the county to rank 7th overall.
Dowdy, the Southern Conference First Team selection & Player of the Year, also has an unblemished fielding percentage of 1.000.
Joining Dowdy with NFCA All-Region honors are fellow seniors Mollie Hanson and Callie Brister as the duo claimed spots on the South Region's third team. Hanson, a redshirt-senior pitcher, makes her first appearance on an NFCA All-Region team alongside thirdbaseman Callie Brister.
Hanson, a native of Dothan, Alabama, blazed her way to tie the Samford single-season record for wins (23) which is a record she personally set back in 2014. The right-handed hurler was undefeated at home (10-0) with a 1.73 ERA.
She claimed All-SoCon First Team honors along with being named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after pitching 22.0 innings with a no-hit shutout of UNCG, a one-hit shutout of Mercer and a complete-game effort in the win against Furman in the SoCon Championship Game.
Brister joins Hanson and Dowdy as she has had an equally impressive senior year. The Tuscaloosa, Alabama native became Samford's all-time leader in RBIs and home runs after batting in 41 runs and blasting a team-high 12 home runs.
The All-SoCon First Team & Tournament Team selection ranks nationally in multiple NCAA categories which includes: home runs per game (.22), slugging percentage (.657), runs per game (0.84) and triples per game (0.07).
The Bulldogs continue their historic season as the team will compete in the NCAA DI Softball Championships at the Tuscaloosa Regional. Samford will take on nationally seeded No. 6 Alabama at 4 p.m. on the SEC Network.
