AUBURN, Ala. -- Samford's junior national champion Karisa Nelson continued her string of impressive performances Friday as the Bulldogs' All-American set the track record in the 1,500-meter run with an impressive time of 4:17.20 on the opening day of the War Eagle Invitation being held at the Hutsell-Rosen Track on the campus of Auburn University.
Nelson, who became Samford's first Division I national champion earlier this year in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Meet, shattered the previous track record by nearly two full seconds.
The previous track-record time of 4:19.02 was set almost 10 years ago by Tennessee's Sarah Bowman in 2008.
Nelson was definitely pushed by Middle Tennessee's Agnes Abu in the competition Friday. Abu also bested the previous track-record time and nearly upset Samford's Nelson in the event. She posted a time of 4:17.75 to take second place.
Additionally, the Bulldogs' Emma Garner turned in an impressive finish on the opening day of the War Eagle Invitational. Garner competed in the talent-laden 5,000-meter run and placed second in the event with a time of 16:43.02.
Auburn's Veronica Eder proved to be the only participant faster than Garner as the Tigers' senior set a track record with a tally of 16:03.06. Eder's time bested the previous record mark of 16:06.25, which was set in 2011 by Auburn's Holly Knight.
