BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University soccer team outshot the Michigan State Spartans, 20-9, on Sunday, but dropped a heart-wrenching 3-2 decision in a high-profile nonconference contest held at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium. Michigan State's game-winning goal was scored late in the 85^th minute and occurred on a controversial quick reset on a free kick near the Bulldogs' box.

Following a Samford (0-4) foul, as both teams were shifting and resettling due to the possession change, Michigan State's Danielle Stephan immediately placed the ball and quickly sent a pass up ahead to Jamie Cheslik, who was wide open in front of the left side of the net.

The Bulldogs' goalkeeper Anna Maddox nicely recognized the situation and made her way into position, but Cheslik had already generously drove her way into position and scored from 10 yards out.

The goal was scored with approximately five minutes remaining in the match and proved to be Cheslik's second of the season, while giving Michigan State (2-2) it's decisive 3-2 advantage.

Samford outshot the Spartans, 13-3, in the second half. The Bulldogs had a trio of shots carom off the crossbar and MSU goalkeeper Reilley Ott finished the contest with seven key saves, many of them coming against shots from point-blank range.

Samford's Jermaine Seoposenwe, who is the school's all-time leading goal-scorer with 29 in her illustrious career, tallied both of the Bulldogs' goals Sunday. Her first score occurred at 27:07 in the first match to even the score at 1-1.

Seoposenwe's second goal also tied the match, this time at 2-2 in the 62^nd minute of play. Samford's senior forward from Cape Town, South Africa, is the Southern Conference's active career leader in goals and leads the Bulldogs with three tallies this season.

Michigan State's first two goals were scored by Morgan McKerchie in the 22^nd minute and Kristelle Yewah in the 29^th frame.

So far this season, Samford has opened its 2017 campaign with matches against Memphis, Alabama, No. 4-ranked Florida State and Michigan State.

The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Friday at 7 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs close out their current three-match homestand with an in-state contest versus Alabama State to be held at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
