BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
Samford University and Stetson University played 120 minutes of soccer at Samford Field on Saturday night and finished right where they started, 0-0.
The match was to be a battle for the sixth and final tournament birth in the Trans America Athletic Conference with Samford (8-7-1, 3-4-1 TAAC) entering the match in 6th place a half a game ahead of Stetson (6-9-1, 2-4-1 TAAC). Samford now must beat Georgia State on Wednesday to clinch the final spot. Stetson must at least split its final two games and root for a Georgia State victory against Samford.
Samford came out strong in the first 10 minutes of each half and controlled the run of play through the first 90 minutes. In the sixth minute of play, Hayley Kolb ripped a shot that was saved by Stetson's Genevieve Roy and the rebound was cleared away before a Samford player could reach it. Two minutes later Lindsay Anglin hit the crossbar with a shot. Samford out shot the Hatters 18-8 in the match. Samford took four shots in the first 10 minutes after halftime but could not find the back of the net.
Samford's best opportunity to score came in the second half when Wendi Woods unleashed a shot from 15 yards which Roy saved with her left foot. Soon after Mitzi Mahan took a shot that Roy had to make another fine save on. Roy finished the match with four saves.
Stetson's best chance to score came off a free kick in the 83rd minute. Hannah Wallace drove a shot that was saved by Carrie Ollom but the rebound went to the foot of Emma Astrom who shot the ball wide of goal. In the first overtime, Stetson's Erin Gidney played a dangerous ball into the box which no one could get a foot to. Ollom also finished the night with four saves.
"I thought we played well enough to win," said Samford head coach Barry Spitzer. "We out played them for most of the match but could put the ball in the net. There keeper played well, but we just didn't finish the opportunities we had."
Samford will wrap up the regular season with a critical match at home on Wednesday against Georgia State. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
