The Samford freshmen had a chance to shine as the Bulldogs scored a school-record 11 goals in an 11-0 blowout over NAIA Trevecca Nazarene University in women's soccer action at Samford Field on Saturday.
Samford (8-4) broke single-season team records for most goals in a season (38) and points in a season (107). The Bulldogs also broke the team record for points in a game with 27 against Trevecca (1-9).
Freshman Kelly Christoffer open the scoring just 55 seconds into the match with a header from senior Jackie Foster. Fellow freshman Hayley Kolb scored a pair of goals for her eighth and nine goals of the season to break Samford's single-season goal record of eight set by Mitzi Mahan last season. Kolb also added an assist on a goal by senior Rebecca Kent to give her five points on the afternoon. Freshman Lisa Robishaw scored her first career goal just two minutes into the match and added another one in the 29th minute to give her four points on the day. All toll, Samford freshmen accounted for eight of the 11 goals.
Freshman Emily Darnell and Susan Polhemus each scored the first goals for their careers late in the second half. Polhemus added and assist on Darnell's goal. Wendy Woods scored her fifth goal of the year in 12th minute. Samford scored seven times in the first half on 20 shots. While Trevecca only managed one shot in each period.
Samford goal keeper Carrie Ollom had an easy day as she did not have to record a save in securing her third shutout of the season. Samford out shot Trevecca 42-2
Seniors Foster, Lindsay Anglin, and Rebecca Kent each scored goals while Tiffany Hansen had a pair of assists. Sophomore Allison DeLong also had two assist to round out the scoring for Samford.
"I am proud of the way our freshmen played today," said head coach Barry Spitzer. "The entire team played well, we had 11 different players with points, but I think the freshmen got a lot of minutes and some positive experience which will help in conference play."
Samford will return to conference action next Thursday as the Bulldogs will face defending TAAC champion UCF at 7 p.m. in Orlando, Fla.
