The Samford Bulldogs out shot Troy State 20-10 on their way to a 3-0 victory over the Trojans in Trans America Athletic Conference women's soccer Thursday afternoon.
The victory was Samford's fifth straight and gives the Bulldogs a 5-2 overall record while remaining undefeated in conference play at 2-0. Troy State drops to 1-5 and 0-1 in the TAAC.
Samford freshman Wendy Woods opened the scoring in the 25th minute as she collected a rebound left by TSU goaltender Jessica Murphy off a corner kick by Rebecca Kent. Woods took the rebound with her right foot an placed it in the back of the net for her third goal of the year and gave Samford a 1-0 lead.
In the 27th minute senior mid-fielder Jackie Foster received a pass from Mitzi Mahan and one-timed a rocket shot from 25 yards into the top corner of the goal to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. "It was a nice pass from Mitzi, I saw that I was wide open and it was too perfect of a shot not to take," said Foster of her second goal of the year. "When I saw it go in, I was very excited."
The Bulldogs had many opportunities to score in the second half, but the crossbar and a couple of nice saves by Murphy kept the score at 2-0 until the 88th minute. Woods and sophomore Allison DeLong got behind the Troy State defense, as Murphy came off her line to save a shot by Woods, DeLong recovered the rebound and chipped the ball over Murphy for her second goal of the season.
"We found a rhythm and we capitalized on our opportunities," said head coach Barry Spitzer "I think we are in a good position going to the match on Saturday. We are playing very well in conference right now."
Samford goal keeper Carrie Ollom earned her second shutout of the season by making five saves. The Bulldogs will go for their sixth straight victory at home on Saturday at 1 p.m. against conference foe Campbell.
