BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
Jacksonville State mid-fielder Suzanne Bilbrey placed a right-footed shot just inside the far post in the 95th minute for the game's only score as Jacksonville State defeated Samford 1-0 in front of a crowd of 376 at Samford Field on Saturday.
Bilbrey's goal came just minutes after Samford's Rebecca Kent hit the cross bar with a free kick at the other end of the field and ended Samford's seven-game winning streak, while giveing the Lady Gamecocks their third-straight victory.
Jacksonville State improves to 7-4 on the season and 3-0 in Trans America Athletic Conference play. Samford drops its first home match of the season and falls to 7-3 and 3-1 in the TAAC.
The match was as even as the score through 90 minutes. Both teams finished with seven shots, each goal keeper record two saves and each team committed 14 fouls. Jacksonville State did have six corner kicks to none for Samford.
The best chance for a goal in regulation came off the right foot of Samford's Mitzi Mahan in the 57th minute. Mahan took a shot from 25 yards that just crawled over the top of the cross bar.
"I thought it was a dead even match," said Samford head coach Barry Spitzer. "We played hard and made some opportunities that we just didn't finish on."
Samford will travel to Cookeville, Tenn., to face Tennessee Tech on Wednesday Oct. 4. Jacksonville State will travel to Boca Raton, Fla. on Friday Oct. 6, to face Florida Atlantic.
