Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford's Mitzi Mahan scored four goals to lead a record setting night in Samford's 9-0 win in front of over 300 people against Alabama A&M Wednesday night in women's soccer action at the Samford Soccer Field.

The match marked the Samford's first ever night game and the Bulldogs made the event memorable by setting seven school records. The nine goals broke the old record of six goals in a match set against Nicholls State on Sept. 19th of last season. Samford took a record 41 shots, had eight assists, and amassed 26 total points in the match. Mahan set individual records for goals in a game, points, and least time between goals. Rebecca Kent and Jessica D'Amico each tied school records for most assists in a match with two each.

"We play much better in front of a crowd and that showed tonight," said Samford head coach Barry Spitzer. "Our passing was much better tonight and we are starting to play to our abilty."

Jackie Foster got the scoring started in the 13th minute with header off a D'Amico corner kick. Wendy Woods beat Alabama A&M goal keeper Jennifer Slaton on a near post shot in the 16th minute and Kelly Christoffer dribbled in off a pass from D'Amico and made the score 3-0 in the 18th minute. Mahan, who had assisted on Woods' goal, then scored two goals in 22 seconds in 38th minute to give Samford a 5-0 halftime lead.

Mahan's first goal at 37:45 was a one-timer off a cross from Woods, then Mahan intercepted a pass and scored unassisted at 38:08. The two goals in 22 seconds eclipsed the Samford record for least time between goals. Mahan and Jacksonville State's Angela Tribble had scored within 45 seconds of each other on Sept. 10th of last season.

Mahan wasn't finished, in the 58th minute she received a pass from Foster and buried it in the back of the net from 15 yards for the first hat trick of her career and in the 60th minute, she one-timed a pass from Kent past Slaton for her fourth goal of the night.

"The fans were great tonight, it took us a while to get in our groove, but we came out and we did our jobs," said Mahan of the team's performance.

Woods scored her second goal of the evening in the 65th minute on a pass from Kent who closed out the scoring in the 85th minute off a cross from Tiffany Hansen.

Samford goal keeper Carrie Ollom had a very quite night in recording her first shutout of the season. She faced only two shots and made one save.

Samford returns to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Murray State at the Samford Soccer field.
