Volleyball Falls at EKU

The Eastern Kentucky University volleyball team defeated the Samford Bulldogs tonight, Oct. 31, in three games (30-22, 30-27, 30-26) to move to 17-9 on the year and 8-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference. With the loss, SU falls to 9-15 overall and 3-8 in the OVC.
The conference foes played evenly throughout the three-game match, but eight services aces and 11 team blocks helped the Colonels come out on top.
EKU and SU were tied at 13 in game one when the Colonels went on a 5-0 run to take an 18-13 lead in the opening game. The Bulldogs pulled to within seven at 21-28, but the Colonels went on to take the first game, 30-22.
SU led late in game two, 25-22, but EKU was able to tie it up at 26 apiece. The Colonels went on a 5-1 run to end the game and take the second set, 30-27. In the third and final game, the Colonels went on top 20-15 and never looked back. The Bulldogs pulled to within three at 28-25, but EKU went on to win by the final of 30-26.
Lesley Aldridge led the Colonels with 14 kills, 10 digs, four aces and a .379 hitting percentage. Kristi Kuzma had a match-high 16 digs, while Jessica Sabath added 12 digs and nine kills. Liz Guard notched nine kills, four block solos, three block assists for EKU. Kasha Brozek tallied eight kills and three total blocks, while Denise Grundhoefer had six kills and a .417 hitting percentage. Setter Kelly Jennings dished out 44 assists to go along with seven digs and four kills for the Colonels.
Alyssa Whitehead led the Bulldogs with 17 kills and 11 digs, followed by Hilary Gray with 17 kills and 10 digs. Shannon Smith added nine kills, while Eileen Hatfield recorded nine digs for Samford.
The Bulldogs will travel to Morehead State on Saturday for a 10 a.m. match.
