Birmingham, Ala. -
The Samford softball team shutout the UAB Blazers, 1-0, before falling to the Birmingham-Southern Panthers, 9-1, Friday afternoon at the Magic City Classic hosted by Birmingham Southern.
Samford is now 7-5 for the season and 1-1 in the round-robin tournament. The Bulldogs face UAB Saturday at 1 P.M. and rematch against BSC at 5 P.M.
Senior pitcher Amber Fuller had a stellar outing in game one against UAB. She picked up the win to improve to 3-1. Fuller walked only one batter and struck out nine. She carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before allowing a two-out double as the only Blazer hit.
Senior Deanna Resmondo provided all the offensive support Fuller would need with a two-out home run to left field for the 1-0 win. The home run was her third of the season and fourth of her career. Angela Bednark and Michelle Wright also had hits for the Bulldogs against UAB.
The night cap did not turn out as well for the Bulldogs. The Panthers jumped ahead 1-0 in the second inning. With runners on the corners, Andrea Boohaker stole second and drew the throw from the catcher that allowed teammate Kassie Pustejovsky to steal home.
Things did not improve for Samford in the third inning when BSC added two more runs to their tally. In the fifth inning, Pustejovsky singled and went to third on an error by shortstop Trisha Holman. She then scored on a throwing error by Bednark who was trying to catch the base runner at second base. Erin Landsburg then walked the next two batters to load the bases, and Kristen Fuhrmann singled to the shortstop to send home another run. The Panthers added two more runs before the Bulldogs were able to get out of the inning with the score at 7-0.
BSC scored two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to go up 9-0 on the Bulldogs. However, with a nine-game hitting streak on the line, Bednark spoiled the shutout with a solo home run for Samford. With that hit, she extended her hitting streak to 10 games. The home run was her second of the season and 16th of her career.
Kelly Smith went two-for-three for the Bulldogs, hitting her fifth double of the season. Erin Hall also had a hit for Samford.
Emilee Lewis took the loss for Samford. She is now 2-2 on the season. Lewis allowed seven hits, five runs, walked one and struck out one. Landsburg pitched the remaining two and two-thirds innings. She allowed eight hits, four runs, walked two and struck out one.
