Men's Tennis Edges Past Murray State In Key Conference Match

MURRAY, Ky. ---- The Samford University men's tennis team claimed a 4-3 win over Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State on Friday in Murray, Ky. The match was originally supposed to be played on Murray's outdoor tennis courts, but inclement weather forced the teams to move the match indoors.
With the win, Samford improves to 9-7 overall and 5-2 in OVC play, while Murray State falls to 5-8 overall and 3-2 against OVC opponents. The Bulldogs started of the match by winning the doubles point, which proved to be crucial, as the teams split the six singles points.
In doubles play, Stuart Misner and Hank Grant downed Nicholas Ksiezopolski and Yuri Pompeu on the No. 2 court, 8-6, to split the doubles matches 1-1. On the No. 3 court, Johnny Griffee and James Bryce came from behind to win the match, 9-8, over Jeff Lester and Hunter Gerlach and seal the doubles point for the Bulldogs.
"I was proud of the way the team performed tonight," said Samford head coach Kemper Baker. "We were down three match points in doubles play and somehow Bryce and Griffee found a way to comeback and win, which was ultimately the deciding factor in the game. We're going to try to match that intensity tomorrow, as we take on Eastern Illinois."
In singles play, Misner claimed a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Ksiezopolski to win the No. 3 point, and Bradley Weaver won, 6-4, 6-2, on the No. 4 court, defeating Pompeu. Griffee clinched the win for the Bulldogs, with a 62, 6-1 win over Lester on the No. 6 court.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, when they take on Eastern Illinois at 10 a.m. Results will be posted at www.samfordsports.com following the conclusion of the match.
