Women's Basketball Drops 60-57 Decision To Morehead State

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford women's basketball team lost a hard-fought contest, 60-57, to the Morehead State Eagles Thursday night at Seibert Hall.
"I was pleased with every aspect of the game except for a four or five-minute stretch," Samford head coach Mike Morris said. "I thought we played hard and we competed. One of the strengths of our team is making free throws, but we shot 31 free throws and made 20."
Samford (9-9, 4-5 OVC) was led by Alex Munday with 13 points and six rebounds. Taryn Towns scored 12 points and pulled down five rebounds, while Veronica Pike followed with 10 points and five rebounds. As a team, Samford shot 51.5 percent (17-of-33) from the floor, compared to Morehead State's 39.7 percent (25-of-63).
Morehead State (8-9, 7-2 OVC) was led by Anitha Smith-Williams with 17 points. Brandi Rayburn followed with nine points for the Eagles.

Samford jumped out to an early 7-2 lead with 17:27 to go in the first half following a three-pointer by Towns. After MSU cut the lead to three, Samford went on an 8-0 run to take a 15-4 lead with 12:46 to go in the half after a layup by Towns.
Samford pushed its lead out to 15 at 24-9 with 10:38 to go in the half following a three-point play by Karmen Smith. Morehead State could get no closer than 10 the rest of the half as Samford took a 38-27 lead into halftime.
In the second half, with Samford leading, 39-29, Morehead State went on an 11-0 run to take a 40-39 lead with 12:40 to go in the game after a three-point play by Smith-Williams. Samford scored the next five point to take a 44-40 lead with 11:46 to go after a pair of free throws by Smith.
With Samford leading, 48-44, Morehead State went on an 8-1 run to take the lead back at 52-49 with 8:18 to go in the game. Samford scored the next five point to take a 54-52 lead with 7:06 to go after a jumper by Towns.
With the scored tied 56-56, MSU's LaKrisha Brown hit a free throw and Amanda Green hit a jumper to give the Eagles a 59-56 lead with 1:29 to go. Munday hit a free throw with 1:11 to go to cut the lead to 59-57, and Brown added a free throw for MSU to push their lead to three at 60-57 with 14 seconds left. A three-pointer at the buzzer by Tish Pilkerton fell short to make the final score 60-57.
Samford will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 20, when the Bulldogs play host to Eastern Kentucky. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start from Seibert Hall.
