Women's Basketball Downs Princeton, 77-68, In WNIT Consolation Bracket

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford freshman forward Savannah Hill scored 18 points to lead the Bulldog women's basketball team to a 77-68 win over Princeton in the consolation bracket of the WNIT Friday night at the Pete Hanna Center.
"This is a good win," Samford head coach Mike Morris said. "We beat a well-coached team and a good team. I was very impressed with the way we came out in the second half. And then, when they made a run, we were able to answer."
Behind Hill's career-high total, Taryn Towns scored 13 points, pulled down seven rebounds and dished out eight assists in the game. Monica Maxwell scored 14 points, and Megan Wilderotter added 10 for the Bulldogs.
"Savannah, with 14 points in the first half, really got us going," Morris said. "She also did a tremendous job guarding their best player. Taryn had 13 points and led us in assists and rebounds with no turnovers, and that is what a senior point guard is supposed to do."
Princeton was led by Meagan Cowher with 20 points and eight rebounds. Ali Prichard scored 12 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Caitlin O'Neill added 10 points for the Tigers.

Samford jumped out to an early 7-4 lead with 18:04 to play in the first half following a jumper by Maxwell. Princeton answered with a 7-0 run to take an 11-7 lead with 14:41 to go in the half after a layup by Cowher.
The Bulldogs then went on an 8-0 run to retake the lead at 15-11 with 9:12 to go in the opening period after a three-pointer by Hill. Samford pushed its lead out to as much as six in the first half, and the Bulldogs took a 33-30 lead into halftime.
Samford pushed its lead to eight early in the second half at 40-32 with 16:05 to go in the game after a pair of free throws by Towns. Samford increased its lead to 14 at 50-36 with 13:01 to go in the contest after a layup by Chika Okoli.
Princeton then went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to six at 50-44 with 11:09 to go in the game after a three-pointer by Whitney Downs. The Tigers cut the Samford lead to three at 52-49, but Samford scored the next five points in a row to push the lead back out to eight at 57-49.
Princeton then scored the next six points in a row to cut the lead to two at 57-55 with 6:59 to play. Samford then went on a 7-1 run to make the score 64-56 with 3:02 to go after a layup by Wilderotter.
The Tigers cut the Samford lead back to three points late in the game, but Samford finished the game on a 6-0 run to take the 77-68 win.
With the win, Samford improves to 2-1 on the season, while Princeton drops to 0-3.
Samford will take on East Tennessee State for the consolation bracket championship Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Pete Hanna Center. Prior to the Samford-ETSU game, Princeton will take on Delaware State at 5:30 p.m. East Tennessee State defeated Delaware State, 75-72, in overtime, in the night's first game.
