Munday Leads Women's Basketball To Key 58-48 Win At Morehead State

MOREHEAD, Ky. - Alex Munday scored 24 points to lead the Samford women's basketball team to a 58-48 win at Morehead State Thursday night at Johnson Arena.
"This win was about defense and rebounding," Samford head coach Mike Morris said. "We won a road game against a team that was just a game out of first place without making a three-pointer. In the second half, we made some plays we were not making in the first half. I am so proud of our team's effort tonight."
With the win, Samford improves its record to 15-11 overall and 10-7 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Morehead State drops its record to 12-14 overall and 11-6 in league play. Samford remains fourth in the OVC standings, just one game behind Morehead State in third place with three games remaining.
Behind Munday for Samford, Taryn Towns posted her first career double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down a career-high 10 rebounds. Veronica Pike scored nine points and pulled down six rebounds.
With her 24 points, Munday now has 1,245 career points, just two behind Samford's career-leader Amy Cochran with 1,247. Also, Pike played in her 110th career game Thursday night, tying the school record in that category, also held by Cochran.

As a team, Samford shot 39.1 percent for the game to Morehead State's 31.6 percent. Samford went without making a three-pointer for the first time since Jan. 28, 2006, in an overtime loss to Austin Peay. Samford and Morehead State each had 38 rebounds in the contest.
For Morehead State, Holly Williams led the way with 17 points. Tarah Combs added eight points for the Lady Eagles.
Early in the first half, with Samford trailing, 10-8, the Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run to take a 16-10 lead, the biggest of the first half. Morehead State then scored the next six points to tie the score at 16-16. Samford outscored MSU, 6-2, to finish the half as Samford took a 22-18 lead into halftime.
In the first half, Samford shot 35 percent to Morehead State's 28 percent. Samford out-rebounded Morehead State in the first half, 20-19.
Samford pushed its lead to seven points early in the second half at 25-18 and 27-20, but MSU fought back with a 6-1 run to cut the lead to two at 28-26 with 14:37 to go in the game. With Samford leading, 31-29, Morehead State scored six of the next eight points to take a 35-33 lead with 9:19 to go in the game.
After a Samford timeout, the Bulldogs went on a 16-4 run to take a 49-39 lead with 3:14 to go following a pair of free throws by Munday. Morehead State fought back to cut the lead to five at 50-45 with one minute to go, but Samford pulled away down the stretch to take the 58-48 win.
Samford will play at Eastern Kentucky on Saturday, Feb. 17, in Richmond, Ky. The game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. Central tip-off.
