Strong Defensive Effort Lifts Women's Basketball Past Eastern Illinois, 63-41

CHARLESTON, Ill. - The Samford women's basketball team earned a 63-41 win at Eastern Illinois in Ohio Valley Conference action Saturday afternoon at EIU's Lantz Arena.
"From start to finish, on offense and defense, we played a complete game," Samford head coach Mike Morris said. "I was very pleased with how we defended. It was a great team defensive effort."
Alex Munday led Samford (13-11, 8-7 OVC) with 19 points. Chelsee Insell scored 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Monica Maxwell scored eight points, while Taryn Towns added seven points and seven rebounds.
As a team, Samford shot 47.1 percent (24-for-51) to EIU's 25.0 percent (13-for-52) from the floor. Coming into the game, EIU was averaging a league-high 76.0 points per game.

For Eastern Illinois (7-16, 4-10 OVC), Rachel Galligan scored 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
In the first half, Samford jumped out to an early 12-6 lead. With Samford leading, 12-9, the Bulldogs went on a 12-0 run to push the lead to 24-9 with 6:52 to play in the first half following a three-pointer by Towns. Eastern Illinois scored six of the final nine points of the half to cut Samford's lead to 12 at 27-15 heading into halftime.
The Panthers cut the lead to seven at 29-22 and 31-24 early in the second half. With Samford leading, 35-26, the Bulldogs went on a 13-0 run to push the lead out to 22 at 48-26 with 9:18 to go after a three-pointer by Insell.
Eastern Illinois cut the lead to 17 at 50-33, but that was as close as the Panthers could get as Samford came away with the 63-41 win.
Samford will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 10, when the Bulldogs play host to Austin Peay. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. tip-off from Seibert Hall.
