Softball Falls Short Of Three-Game Sweep, 4-2

MOREHEAD, Ky. - The Samford University softball team had its three-game Ohio Valley Conference winning streak snapped Sunday as the Bulldogs suffered a 4-2 road defeat against the Morehead State Eagles.
With the loss, Samford (29-20, 14-10 OVC) fell short of sweeping the three-game series and moved to 8-12 on the road this season. The Bulldogs own an 8-3 all-time record against Morehead State (20-30, 6-17 OVC).
The Eagles scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to earn an early 4-0 advantage.
Morehead State reeled off five hits in the opening frame and the deciding blow of the inning occurred on a one-out triple from junior Korey Ellis. Ellis, who paced the Eagles with a 2-for-2 performance at the plate, drove in a pair of runs with a drive down the right field line.
The score remained 4-0 until the top of the sixth inning when Samford trimmed Morehead State's advantage to 4-2.
Senior Liz Pearse started the Bulldogs' rally with a leadoff single to left field. She then stole second base and advanced to third when Amanda Barrs drew a walk and Emily Deaux was hit by a pitch.
With one out and the bases loaded, sophomore Rachael Reeves singled to left field and drove in both Pearse and Barrs.
Reeves picked up both of Samford's RBIs in the game and proved to be one of five Bulldogs to record a hit. Jessica Owens, Shelley Stanley, Pearse and Barrs were the other four Samford players to tally hits.
With Owens' single in the top of the seventh inning, the Bulldogs' sophomore outfielder extended her hitting streak to eight games. She is batting .481 since April 14 and leads the team with a .333 average against OVC opponents.
Samford's senior pitcher Susanna Meyer (9-7) was handed the loss Sunday, while Morehead State's Alex Gjevre (13-11) picked up the win.
The Samford University softball team will next be in action Saturday as the Bulldogs begin their final OVC series of the regular season against the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
