BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
The Samford University soccer team dropped its first road contest of the 2007 campaign Friday as the Bulldogs were defeated by the Indiana Hoosiers 2-1 in a non-conference matchup held at Armstrong Stadium.
Samford (3-2-0) opened the scoring with a goal by senior forward Cassie Applegate during the 19th minute of play as the Bulldogs garnered an early 1-0 lead in the match.
On the play, Applegate connected on a cross from true freshman Lauren Cook to score the opening goal of the contest. Cook, Samford's leading goal-scorer from Conyers, Ga., tallied her first assist of the season. She currently leads the team with five goals this year.
Indiana (3-1-1) picked up its second-straight one-goal victory Friday. The Hoosiers, coming off of their 2-1 upset victory over the 13th-ranked USC Trojans last week, defeated Samford for the first time in school history.
During the 22nd minute of the first half, Indiana's Christie Kotynski tallied the equalizing goal of the match on a header following a corner. The Hoosiers held possession for most of the contest and outpaced Samford in corner kicks 14-5.
With the score of the match tied at 1-1, Indiana's Leigh Anne Cummings recorded the game-winning goal during the 55th minute of play. Cummings, the Hoosiers' highly-touted freshman from Levittown, N.Y., tallied her second goal of the season on a redirected kick from inside the box.
Samford goalkeeper Cayley Winters finished the match with nine saves. She played all 90 minutes in goal and faced a team-high 24 shot attempts.
The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Sunday as the Bulldogs square off against the High Point Panthers at 10:30 a.m., in the 2007 Marshall NIKE Herd Challenge in Huntington, W.Va.
