Marquette Tops Bulldogs In Non-Conference Duel, 5-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford women's tennis team fought hard against one of the top teams in the Great Lakes Region on Monday, but in the end fell short versus the Marquette Golden Eagles 5-2 in a non-conference matchup held at the Samford Tennis Center.
Samford (2-5) was again forced to play without the services of two of its top four players Monday. Both Lindsey Mallory and Rebecca Kirven are currently rehabilitating from leg injuries and were dressed in street clothes.
Despite being shorthanded, the Bulldogs still earned victories in the top two singles matches against the Golden Eagles. Sophomore Taylor Morgan outlasted Marquette's Paola Calderon, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8), on court No. 1, while Samford's Andrie Meiring also picked up a three-set win over Olga Fischer in the No. 2 singles duel, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (9).
Marquette (12-5) took the doubles point and secured the dual-match victory with singles wins on courts No. 3-6.
With the non-conference triumph, the Golden Eagles extended their winning streak to two matches. Marquette has been victorious in four of its previous five contests and recently knocked off Connecticut 7-0 on March 1.
In doubles play, Samford was forced to default on court No. 3, but the Bulldogs' combination of Jessica Diamond and Meiring held off the Golden Eagles' duo comprised of Kylie Moore and Rachel Hush, 8-7 (4), on court No. 2.
Marquette's Calderon and Robin Metzler clinched the doubles point on court No. 1 with an 8-4 win against Samford's Stephanie Parkison and Morgan.
The Samford women's tennis team will next be in action Saturday as the Bulldogs square off against both Southern Miss and UNO at the 2009 USM Invitational to be held in Hattiesburg, Miss. Samford is slated to play Southern Miss at 10 a.m., and UNO at 2 p.m.
