Football Begins Reading Initiative to Promote Education Day

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Members of the Samford football team took time out of their busy schedules to visit Liberty Park Elementary School on Monday.
Offensive linemen George Allers, Jacob Kirschenbaum and Cory Smith, and safety Alvin Hines II all visited Ms. Jenni Pang's library to read books and answer questions from the kindergarten through fifth graders. The players gave each child a Bulldog Buddies bookmark.
The student-athletes stressed the priority of being Samford "students". They stressed to the kids how important it is to learn to read and make good grades.
"We had such a great time, reading and interacting with the kids," Allers said. "We left hoping that we had left a positive influence on them. It was an incredible experience and I look forward to doing it again."
Football players will be visiting other schools in the Birmingham area in the coming weeks to promote the importance of reading and Education Day.
Samford football will be hosting Education Day on Saturday, Nov. 20 for the Bulldogs' game against The Citadel. All kids, who bring their bookmark, will be admitted to the football game for free. Also, all kids in attendance can enter to win a free flat-screen television to be given away at the game. The school who brings the most children to the game will receive a donation from the Samford Athletics Department to the winning school's library.
