June 13, 2011

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford center fielder Phillip Ervin was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association's (NCBWA) Freshman All-America Team, the organization announced on Monday.

Ervin, a native of Leroy, Ala., served as the team's starting center fielder throughout the season. He led the team in batting with a .371 average, while hitting 15 doubles and driving in 41 runs.

During the 2011 season, Ervin compiled the longest hitting streak in the Southern Conference this season, hitting safely in 19-straight games. Ervin was named first-team All-Southern Conference by the media, and second-team All-SoCon and All-Freshman by the league's coaches.

This marks the second Freshman All-America team Ervin has been named to, as he was also selected for the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team by Collegiate Baseball.
