Men's Golf Earns 10th-Place Finish At 2011 Mason Rudolph Championship

FRANKLIN, Tenn. - In its toughest competition of the 2011 fall season, the Samford University men's golf team finished 10th at the talent-laden Mason Rudolph Championship held at the highly-acclaimed Vanderbilt Legends Club South Course. The prestigious three-day event was hosted by Vanderbilt University.
The Vanderbilt Legends Club South Course was set up as a par-71, 7,100-yard challenge.
The field for the 2011 Mason Rudolph Men's Championship included Samford, Akron, Belmont, College of Charleston, Davidson, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Western Carolina.
The Bulldogs finished in 10th place Sunday, four strokes ahead of South Carolina and only eight strokes behind eighth place and host school Vanderbilt. Samford closed out the 54-hole competition with a total team score of 873 (293-293-287).
Junior Casey O'Toole led the Bulldogs to their best round of the tournament Sunday. O'Toole fired a team-best score of 2-under-par 69 and paced Samford to an 18-hole tally of 287. O'Toole, the Bulldogs' native of Oneonta, Ala., finished the three-day competition with a score of even-par 213 (71-73-69) and placed 14th in the individual standings.
Samford's Drew Aimone finished 34th in the tournament and carded a 54-hole score of 219 (74-72-73). He was followed closely by teammates Gabe Hyde (75-74-74=223) and Bill Nabors (80-74-71=225). Sophomore William Catanzaro also tallied a solid three-round score as the Bulldogs' native of Gadsden, Ala., finished with a 227 (73-79-75).
Middle Tennessee's Hunter Green earned individual medalist honors Sunday as he led the Blue Raiders to the team title with a 54-hole mark of 844 (285-280-279). Middle Tennessee held on to defeat Ole Miss by a single stroke. The Rebels concluded the weekend with a 54-hole tally of 845 (290-275-280).
Individually, the Blue Raiders' Green defeated Davidson's John Skeadas by two strokes. Green fired a 4-under-par 67 on Sunday to earn the championship title with a three-day mark of 8-under-par 205 (70-68-670.
The Samford University men's golf team will next be in action Oct. 3-4, as the Bulldogs are scheduled to compete in the highly-acclaimed Jerry Pate Intercollegiate which will be held at the Old Overton Golf Club in Birmingham, Ala.
