The Samford women's basketball team will play host to Southern Conference-leading Appalachian State in a key SoCon matchup Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Pete Hanna Center.
Samford enters the game in fourth place in the SoCon standings with a record of 17-10 overall and 12-6 in SoCon play. Appalachian State is currently tied with Davidson for first place with a record of 22-4 overall and 16-2 in league play.
The Bulldogs are coming off a 58-48 win over third-place Chattanooga on Wednesday. The Mountaineers last played on Saturday, winning at Furman by a score of 85-70.
In Samford's win over Chattanooga, the Bulldogs were led by senior guard Paige Anderson with 18 points. Senior guard Ruth Ketcham added 14 points in the win for Samford.
For the season, Samford is led in scoring by Anderson, averaging 13.3 points per game. Ketcham and freshman forward Taylor Reece are tied for second on the team in scoring, with an average of 9.0 points per game.
Junior forward Hannah Dawson leads the team in rebounding, pulling down 4.9 boards per contest. Ketcham is second on the squad in rebounding, averaging 4.2 rebounds per game.
Senior guard Jazmine Powers leads the team in assists, dishing out 3.4 assists per game. Ketcham is also second on the team in assists, averaging 2.3 assists per game.
Appalachian State is led in scoring by Anna Freeman, averaging 15.2 points per game. Courtney Freeman is second on the team in scoring, with an average of 12.1 points per game.
Kelsey Sharkey leads the Mountaineers in rebounding, pulling down 6.8 rebounds per contest. Anna Freeman is second in rebounding, averaging 6.3 rebounds per game.
Chakeitha Weldon is the team leader in assists, dishing out 2.8 assists per game. Anna Freeman is also second on the team in assists, averaging 2.7 assists per game.
Samford and Appalachian State will be meeting for the 10th time, with Samford leading the series, 5-4. Earlier this season, the teams met in Boone, N.C, with ASU coming away with a 53-49 victory.
Last season, the teams met three times, with ASU winning two of the three meetings. Samford, however, took the final meeting of the season, winning, 57-54 to earn the SoCon Tournament title.
Samford has a record of 1-2 against ASU in Birmingham, and the Bulldogs are 2-2 in games played in Boone. Samford is 2-0 against ASU at neutral sites.
Saturday is Senior Day for the women's basketball team. Prior to Saturday's game, Samford's four seniors, Anderson, Ketcham, Powers and J'Quita Babineaux will be honored. The team does have one final home game after Saturday's contest. The Bulldogs will play host to Davidson Monday evening at 7 p.m.
