SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Samford University men's golf team carded a total team score of 288 in Tuesday's final round of competition at the 24th Annual Coca-Cola Invitational as the Bulldogs jumped into a tie for eighth place at the 54-hole, two-day event held at The Country Club of Spartanburg, a par-72, 6,648-yard course.
The 2012 Coca-Cola Invitational was hosted by Wofford University and consisted of the following 17 teams: Samford, Appalachian State, Campbell, Charleston Southern, Davidson, East Tennessee State, Elon, Gardner-Webb, High Point, James Madison, Longwood, Presbyterian, Radford, Richmond, Stetson, USC Upstate and Wofford.
Samford finished the tournament with a final team score of 872 (288-296-288) on Tuesday and concluded the 54-hole competition tied with High Point (285-291-296=872) for eighth place.
The Bulldogs doubled their best performance of the two-day event in the final round and finished the 2012 Coca-Cola Invitational only four strokes out of fourth place. Samford, with its 54-hole tally of 872, nearly pulled off a last-day rally to catch the tournament-host and fourth-place finisher Wofford at 869 (286-292-291).
Charleston Southern earned the championship title of the 17-team competition by 10 strokes with a tournament-record mark of 841 (282-280-279). The previous record of 847 was set in 2010 by East Tennessee State. Charleston Southern's 23-under-par performance was also a new tournament record.
Finishing 10 strokes behind the leader was second-place East Tennessee State with a three-round total of 851 (285-286-280). Campbell University rounded out the top three by carding a 54-hole score of 861 (288-283-290).
In the individual standings, Campbell's Vaita Cuillaume won the championship title with a stellar 12-under-par 204 (69-64-71). Guillaume's 204 proved to be a tournament record for 54-holes as he broke the previous record of 205 that was set by Michael Capone of Wake Forest in 1999. His 12-under-par finish also broke Capone's record of 11-under-par in relation to par finish.
Samford's Casey O'Toole turned in a brilliant tournament this week as he concluded play with a 3-under-par total of 213 (74-72-67). His final-round tally of 67 on Tuesday was the team's best score of the tournament. O'Toole, a native of Oneonta, Ala., finished the tournament tied for eighth place in the individual standings.
Along with O'Toole's stellar performance at the 2012 Coca-Cola Invitational, the Bulldogs' true freshman Zach Hughes also turned in a solid score of 2-over-par 218 (72-72-74) on Tuesday. Samford's up-and-coming native of Mobile, Ala., finished tied for 21st place in the individual standings.
The Bulldogs' scoring Tuesday was rounded out by William Catanzaro (73-77-71=221), Bill Nabors (69-77-79=225) and Drew Aimone (76-75-76=227).
