BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—
The Samford football team opened spring practice for 2013 with a  two-hour workout in shorts and helmets Wednesday afternoon at Seibert Stadium.

The Bulldogs went through 24, five-minute periods of work. The team worked on individual, special teams and team drills during the workout. Samford head coach Pat Sullivan described it as a typical first spring practice.

“It was probably a typical first day in spring,” Sullivan said. “We have a long way to go to build a good football team. We lost a lot of good players from last year, and we're starting to try to fit the pieces of the puzzle together again. There were some that stood out, but in shorts it's more of just trying to get back in the flow, learning the plays, going through the different assignments. I think the mental concentration today was not quite as good as I'd like to see it.”

Over the last several weeks, the team has been going through its offseason conditioning program with strength and conditioning coach Ryan Davis. Sullivan said the program has paid off for his team.

“They're in good shape,” Sullivan said. “If we had to play a game today, conditioning wouldn't be a problem.”

Sullivan added that, even though the Bulldogs can only practice in shorts and helmets for its first two practices, there are still some things he wants his team to accomplish during these first two workouts.

“What you want to do is get back out with a football, work on your fundamentals, start working on drills, start running plays, even though you don't have pads on,” Sullivan said. “You have to get back and get your assignments down on the different things. Your one-on-one, your seven-on-seven and pass scale, you can do those things. We have some holes to fill in the kicking game. We lost our place-kicker, so we have to find one. We have a lot of things to do in a lot of areas.”

The team will practice again in shorts and helmets Thursday afternoon. The practice is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. at Seibert Stadium.
