SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Samford University soccer team was honored Tuesday with five All-Southern Conference members, a pair of First-Team All-SoCon players, two Second-Team honorees, as well as pair of members on the 2014 SoCon All-Freshman Team, it was announced by the league office. Additionally, the Bulldogs' head coach
Todd Yelton received his fourth Coach of the Year honor.
The SoCon's 10 coaches voted on a pair of all-conference teams, an all-freshman team and the four individual awards. They were not allowed to vote for themselves or their players.
The all-conference first and second teams included 11 players each, voted on by position, while the all-freshman team consisted of 11 players with no consideration for positions.
Samford's Yelton received his fourth Coach of the Year honor Tuesday. Yelton, the all-time winningest coach in Bulldog history with 161 victories at Samford, now owns a 201-103-36 record throughout his illustrious 17-year career.
The Bulldogs own a 13-7 overall record this season and has now reached at least the 12-win plateau in nine of Yelton's 13 years at the helm.
Jermaine Seoposenwe Samford sophomores
Jermaine Seoposenwe and
Anna Allen were both named to the SoCon First Team on Tuesday.
Seoposenwe, the Bulldogs' dynamic forward from Cape Town, South Africa, leads the team with 11 assists this season. She also scored her eighth goal of 2014 on Saturday against The Citadel on a penalty kick in the second half. Seoposenwe boasts a team-high 27 points and is tied for Samford's all-time single-season record in points with former Bulldog-great Marian Wagner, who set the mark in 2002.
Additionally, Seoposenwe is just one assist shy of tying Rebecca Bohler's single-season record of 12 assists, which was set in 2005.
Allen, Samford's talented 5-foot-7 native of Vestavia Hills, Ala., has anchored the Bulldogs' back line this season and played a key role in the team's SoCon-clinching victories against Mercer and The Citadel. On Saturday, Samford's aggressive defender helped slow down The Citadel's speedy forward Vanessa Aponte in a must-win SoCon Tournament showdown held at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
Last week, Allen and the Bulldogs' defensive back line shut out the previously undefeated and first-place Mercer Bears in a 1-0 victory that secured Samford's 2014 SoCon regular-season title.
Anna Allen Also honored on Tuesday were Second Team members
Malcanisha Kelley and
Anna Maddox.
Kelley, just a sophomore, garnered her second All-SoCon selection of her young, up-and-coming career, while Maddox received the prestigious honor in her first season as a Bulldog. Kelley boasts seven goals and five assists this year, and has also notched a pair of game-winning scores. As a true freshman, Kelley earned First-Team All-SoCon honors and was named to the all-freshman team.
Maddox, Samford's highly-touted true freshman from Warner Robins, Georgia, has played a huge role in the Bulldogs' 13-7 overall record this season, as well as the team's SoCon regular-season championship.
In her first collegiate year, Maddox boasts a solid 1.22 goals-against average, as well as five solo shutouts and a pair of shared shutouts. She has started in all 20 matches this season and only allowed a total of 24 goals; all while accumulating 85 saves.
Maddox was also honored with SoCon All-Freshman Team accolades Tuesday, and was joined on the listing with midfielder
Virginia McNeill. McNeill, Samford's athletic 5-foot-6 native of Charlotte, North Carolina, has earned playing time in all 20 of the team's matches this season and earned seven starts as a true freshman.
Malcanisha KelleyMcNeill has logged 1,286 minutes this year, which ranks sixth on the team. She also registered a key assist at Chattanooga on Sept. 28.
Furman midfielder Stephanie DeVita was selected as the SoCon Player of the Year, while teammate Catie Moore was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Year. ETSU's Garazi Murua was tabbed the SoCon Freshman of the Year.
Furman earned six all-conference picks, including four first-team picks. Regular-season SoCon champion Samford and Mercer had four all-conference selections each. ETSU, Furman, Samford and Wofford had two all-freshman picks each.
DeVita, who was the SoCon Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year in 2012, becomes just the second player in league history to be named player of the year twice, joining Furman great Emily Turgeon, who won the award in 2000 and 2002. DeVita is second in the SoCon this season with 16 goals and tied for third with 36 total points. The junior from Simpsonville, South Carolina, is the SoCon's active career leader in goals (50) and points (117) and is in the top five in SoCon history in both categories.
Moore earned the inaugural SoCon Defensive Player of the Year award by anchoring a defense that has posted a league-best eight shutouts on the season and allowed just 17 goals in 18 matches. The senior from Greenville, South Carolina, has started all 16 matches in which she's appeared this season and earned her second straight all-conference nod.
Anna MaddoxJoining DeVita and Moore on the first team were Paladin teammates Carlie Couch (forward) and India Robinson (midfield), while Jamie Alexander (forward) and Rose Hull (goalkeeper) earned spots on the second team. The sextet, along with all-freshman honorees Molly Dwyer and Rachel Shah, has helped Furman to a 13-3-2 record so far this season, including a runner-up SoCon finish at 6-1-2 in conference play.
ETSU's Garazi Murua becomes the Bucs' first SoCon Freshman of the Year, as the league newcomers are back in the SoCon after a nine-year absence. Murua, a defender from Getxo, Spain, has started 19 matches this year and has contributed to the nation's top-scoring team with five points on two goals and an assist. She has also helped the Bucs to five shutouts on the season.
Samford's Yelton picked up his second SoCon Coach of the Year nod, as well as his fourth overall, after leading the Bulldogs to their second SoCon regular-season title in the last four years (2011). Yelton guided Samford to a 13-7 overall mark and a 7-2 league finish that included wins in six of its final seven conference matches to end the regular season.
Four of Yelton's charges earned all-conference honors, as Seoposenwe (forward) and Allen (defender) earned first-team nods and Kelley (forward) and Maddox (goalkeeper) took second-team distinction. Maddox and classmate McNeill also earned spots on the all-freshman team.
Virginia McNeillETSU placed three student-athletes on the first team. Hannah Short (forward) is the nation's leading scorer with 60 points and a SoCon-record 26 goals so far on the season, while midfielder Sarah Zadrazil leads the nation in assists with 20, which ties the SoCon single-season record. Defender Jasmin Dutton is close behind with 17 assists this year.
UNCG forward Chesney White, who is second in the conference in scoring with 37 points on 15 goals and seven assists, and Mercer keeper Maggie Cropp, who leads the SoCon in goals against average (0.62), save percentage (.853) and shutouts (five), round out the first team.
Mercer led the way with three second-team selections, including Washida Blackman (forward), Lauren Gassie (midfield) and Sarah Daane (defender). The Bears led the league for much of the season and suffered their first SoCon loss on the final day of the regular season, finishing 6-1-2 and tied with Furman in the runner-up position.
UNCG had a pair of second-team selections in midfielder Rebecca Burrows and defender Georgia Brown, while Citadel midfielder Vanessa Aponte and Western Carolina defender Christina White completed the team.
Murua was joined on the all-freshman squad by ETSU teammate Paola Roversi, while Wofford had a pair of representatives in Rachel Fenner and Hannah Washko. Mady Riegel of The Citadel, Chloe Buehler of UNCG and Chandler Arrowood of Western Carolina rounded out the team.
Samford, Furman, Mercer and ETSU – the top four seeds in order – have advanced to the semifinals of the SoCon Women's Soccer Championship, which will take place at Western Carolina's Catamount Athletic Complex in Cullowhee, North Caroline, on Friday, starting at 4 p.m. (CST). Both matches will appear live on the SoCon Digital Network. The championship match will take place Sunday at Noon and will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Friday at 4 p.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs square off against the fourth-seeded ETSU Buccaneers in the semifinal round of the 2014 SoCon Tournament, which is being held at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina.
Earlier this fall, Samford and ETSU met on the pitch for the first time in school history and the Bulldogs dropped a 3-1 decision at home. The loss proved to be a huge pivot point in Samford's season as the Bulldogs have since been victorious in seven of their last eight matches.
In Friday's second semifinal matchup to be held at the Catamount Athletic Complex, No. 2 Furman will face No. 3 Mercer at 6:30 p.m. (CST) on Nov. 7.
