SAAC Holds Christmas Party At Cornerstone

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) held a Christmas party for students at Cornerstone Elementary School Friday, Dec. 5.

SAAC raised over $700 from all of Samford's teams to fund the party, and over 60 student-athletes and staff members volunteered their time to help with the event.
Â
The event was set up by Katie Danehy, a senior defender on the Samford soccer team.
Â
Danehy was working with Samford Assistant Director of Athletics for Student Services/Academic Enhancement Harold Goss to start a mentorship program through SAAC. Goss put her in touch with Drayton Nabers with the Frances Marlin Mann Center for Ethics and Leadership at Samford.

In addition to his role with the Mann Center, Nabers is also the Chairman of the Board of Directors at Cornerstone. Samford has held a Christmas party at area elementary schools in the past, and Danehy and other members of SAAC thought it would make sense to hold this year's event at Cornerstone Elementary.

Danehy said the staff at Cornerstone was extremely helpful with the event.

"One of the reasons it was so easy and fun was that the administration at Cornerstone was so helpful," Danehy said. "We didn't have to worry about any of the logistics, they had everything set up. So, when our student-athletes showed up all they had to do was have fun with the kids."
Â
Samford's student-athletes and staff spent time with the Cornerstone students reading Christmas stories, making ornaments, decorated Christmas cookies that were donated by Sodexho and playing multiple sports. There was also a blow-up slide for the kids to play on, and they even got a visit from Santa and one of his elves.
