Samford Shines On Day One Of SoCon Championships

DAY ONE RESULTS
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Samford University track and field team positioned itself quite nicely on day one of the Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships after both the men's and women's squads ended the day in first place.
The men's side tallied 59 points on the day and the women racked up 63.5 points to take a 13 point lead over second place Appalachian State; the men currently hold a 14 point lead over Western Carolina.
Senior Ashley Cope led the way in the heptathlon on day one with 1,370 points through four events. Cope took first place in both the 100-meter hurdles and the shot put while she also posted second place finishes in the high jump and the 200-meter dash.
Steven Bastien anchored the men's decathlon with 3,866 points through five events. Bastien earned first place in the 400-meter dash, the long jump and the 100-meter dash while he also notched second finishes in the shot put and high jump competitions.
The men and the women captured five individual SoCon championships on the day as Emily Allen and Sidney Jordan both took first place finishes in the women's and men's hammer throw event.
The Bulldogs also doubled up first place finishes in the men's and women's pole vault as Owen Wagoner took first in the men's competition and Claire Goodson captured the women's top spot.
Bastien earned an individual SoCon championship in the men's long jump competition.
Kristen Brinning took home second place accolades in the women's hammer thrown behind Allen and Nicole Charley was just edged out by Georgia Southern's Jasmine Walker in the women's long jump for a second place finish.
Senior Shelby Builta posted a third place finish in the women's Javelin with a throw of 39.39m while Bo Ackerson-Gilroy also took third with a throw of 58.30m.
The men and women return to action tomorrow for the chance to finish strong on the final day of competition at the SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
