11.2.16 | Women's Cross Country, Cross Country
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford University junior cross-country runner Karisa Nelson has been named the Southern Conference Athlete of the Month for women's cross-country, the league office announced Wednesday.
Nelson, a native of Brewton, Ala., posted a trio of personal-record performances in the month of October. She finished no lower than seventh place in the three races she competed.
Nelson began her record-setting month at the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival in Fayetteville, Ark., on Oct. 1. Racing a field of top competition in her season debut, Nelson clocked a 47-second 5K personal-best 16 minutes, 38.99 seconds to earn a sixth-place finish.
She was tabbed SoCon Runner of the Week for her performance.
Nelson built upon her success at the University of Alabama Crimson Classic on Oct. 14. In her first 6K of the season, she lowered her personal best by 16 seconds and crossed the finish line in seventh place with a time of 20:55.9.
Nelson capped her impressive month this past weekend at the SoCon Cross Country Championships. On Oct. 29, Nelson became Samford's first women's individual conference cross-country champion since 2012.
She clipped 16 more seconds off her 5K personal best, registering a swift mark of 16:22.62 Nelson narrowly edged Furman's Savannah Carnahan, who placed second in 16:24.72.
Paced by Nelson's performance, the Bulldog women placed second at the conference meet – their highest team finish since 2010.
The Bulldogs were rewarded for their effort in the latest poll from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, which was released Oct. 31. The team moved from No. 15 to No. 14 in the South Region rankings.
Both the Samford women's and men's cross-country team will return to action on Nov. 11 at the NCAA South Regionals in Tallahassee, Fla.
