Bulldogs Finish Third and Tenth at Regionals

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - - The Samford men's and women's cross country teams competed Friday morning in the 2017 NCAA South Regional at the Harry Pritchett Running Park in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The women's team finished third in the race, with seniors Karisa Nelson and Anna Long qualifying for the NCAA Championship meet, while the men came in tenth in the event.

The women began the day with a 6K race followed by the men's 10K.
Â
The ladies came out strong as they were led by seniors Nelson, Long and Haley Ward. Nelson went out with the lead pack and never looked back as she never fell behind the fourth place position. Nelson held strong and took home a runner-up finish. Long made her surge from the 73rd position to the fourth spot between the 500M mark and the 2300M mark. Long's 69 spot jump propelled her to a sixth place finish overall. Ward, the Ole Miss transfer finished ninth as she made a strong push of her own down the stretch bringing in a third top ten finish for the Bulldogs on the women's side.

On the men's side, Arséne Guillorel led the Bulldogs to a top ten finish with his ninth place finish overall. Guillorel fell back to 15th place after the 2K mark but made up ground throughout the rest of the race to secure the Bulldogs' only top ten finish.

The Samford women finished behind only Ole Miss (1st) and Georgia (2nd) just one spot from securing an automatic team bid for the NCAA Championship meet.

The men claimed tenth place which was one spot behind Georgia (9th) and four spots better than SoCon rival ETSU (14th).

The 2017 NCAA Cross Country Championships will be held Saturday, Nov. 18, in Louisville, Ky.
