Four Bulldogs earn top-10 finishes on the opening day of competition held at Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. -- Samford distance runner Paul Richardson earned a first-place finish Friday at the 2017 Tiger Track Classic as the Bulldogs' junior from Huntsville registered a time of 14:49.92 in the 5000-meter run to claim the championship title against 20 competitors. The opening day of action was held at the Hutsell-Rosen Track on the campus of Auburn University.
Richardson edged out David Marley for the first-place position Friday. Samford's first of three top-10 performers in the event defeated Marley by less than a second. Marley, who ran unattached, posted a time of 14:50.88.
The Bulldogs' Dillon Dean and Michael Rohdy also posted top-10 marks in the event. Dean finished eighth with a time of 15:16.16, while Rohdy placed ninth with a tally of 15:17.52.
Also on Friday, Samford's Anna Long registered a sixth-place finish in the women's 5000-meter run. Long, the Bulldogs' talented distance runner from Scottsdale, Arizona, posted a time of 17:34.83 in the event.
The 2017 Tiger Track Classic features a large field this weekend. Along with Samford and the homestanding Auburn Tigers, the two-day event also includes UAB, Alabama A&M, Boston University, Cincinnati, Columbus State, Furman, Georgia State, Holy Cross, Indiana State, Northeastern, UNC-Wilmington, South Alabama, SEMO, Troy and Western Carolina.
Saturday's action will begin at 11 a.m., with the women's pole vault. The running events are scheduled to start at noon with the 4x100-meter relay and conclude at 5:05 p.m., with the men's 3000 meters.
