Bulldogs Continue Strong Outdoor Season At Georgia Tech Invitational

Samford’s Oates wins the pole vault; Bulldogs earn six top-five performances

ATLANTA, Ga. -- In their final tune-up before the all-important Southern Conference Outdoor Championships, the Samford University track and field teams finished strong at the 2018 Georgia Tech Invitational on Saturday, which was held over the weekend at the George C. Griffin Track & Field Facility.
Against top-flight competition, Samford squared off against more than 30 schools in the meet, including showdowns against the homestanding Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Boston College, Florida State, Southern Miss, St. John's and Georgia State.
The Bulldogs' Tray Oates, who is one of the top pole vaulters in the nation, cruised to the championship title in the event with an easy clear of 5.50 meters. Samford's senior handily won the competition over second-place performer Nikita Kirillov, who participated unattached.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, the Bulldogs' Ben Garner registered a third-place performance with a time of 9:17.92. He finished nearly five full seconds ahead of the fourth-place Robert Rupp of Lipscomb.
Matt Cahoon, Samford's talented true freshman from Cullman, Alabama, also earned a third-place performance, this time in the discus throw. Cahoon hurled a distance of 48.12 meters in the competition to top Belmont's Stephen Gibson, who placed fourth in the event.
Samford's string of top-five outings continued in the high jump this weekend as junior Keyth Fightmaster earned a fourth-place performance. The Bulldogs' talented native of Calhoun topped a height of 2.05 meters to finish fourth. Fightmaster bested Rhode Island's Eric Wicks to claim the No. 4 position.
Marquis Barnes, Samford's jumps specialist, also earned a fourth-place finish this weekend. In the long jump event, Barnes notched a distance of 7.01 meters and topped Georgia Tech's William Soloman for the fourth-place position.
The Bulldogs' Maggie Johnston, who is only a sophomore, placed fifth in the discus throw. She launched a distance of 45.13 meters to garner the top-five finish. Johnston beat out Tennessee State's Amani Taylor for the No. 5 spot in the final standings. Taylor's distance proved to be 43.55 meters.
The Samford University track and field teams will next be in action May 10-11, as the Bulldogs will travel to Cullowhee, North Carolina, for the Southern Conference Championships, which will be hosted by Western Carolina University at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
