Nelson Finishes Runner-Up at NCAA Championships
3.9.19 | Track and Field
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Karisa Nelson finished runner-up in the finals of the women's mile at the NCAA Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex on Saturday.
After finishing first in her heat and posting a 4:36.90 time in the semifinals of the event on Friday, Nelson advanced to the finals of the women's mile – an event she won two years ago.
Nelson finished the event with a time 4:38.24, second only to Ohio State's Julia Rizk, who won the national championship with a time of 4:37.
In the final 60 yards of the event, Nelson had the lead until Rizk jumped on her outside with a move to put her in first and win the championship.
After winning the event in 2017, Nelson was unable to defend her crown a year ago due to injury. With the NCAA Championships, being in the same town as her school, she hoped to repeat and bring home her own and Samford its second national championship.
With a top-eight finish, Nelson is a First-Team All-American for the second time.
Her runner-up finish caps off an incredible season performance by the Samford women's indoor track and field team. The team won its fourth straight indoor Southern Conference championship just a few weeks ago.
Next up for Nelson and the whole Samford track and field team will be the South Alabama Invitational, where the Bulldogs will open their 2019 outdoor season.
