Stanton And Washington Receive National Recognition

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford wide receiver and kick returner Montrell Washington and running back Jay Stanton both received national recognition from STATS for their performances in Saturday night's 55-21 win over Alabama A&M.
Washington was named honorable mention National Special Teams Player of the Week, while Stanton was named honorable mention National Freshman of the Week.
In Saturday night's contest, Washington averaged 24.0 yards per punt return, with a long return of 49 yards to set up a touchdown late in the second quarter. He finished the game with a combined 263 all-purpose yards, including 127 receiving, 133 on all returns and three rushing.
Stanton rushed 15 times for a career-high 116 yards and two touchdowns in the win. The performance marked the first time a Samford player has rushed for over 100 yards this season. Stanton also caught two passes for 23 yards and a touchdown.
The Bulldogs will play host to The Citadel Saturday afternoon at Seibert Stadium. The game is set for a 2 p.m. start, and it can be seen live on ESPN+.
