Bulldogs claim women’s title, Dean dominates field at Falcon Classic

MONTEVALLO, Ala. -- Bulldogs claimed the Falcon Classic women's title and men's team showed strong form in the 2019 season opener, Saturday.

In the early morning hours, the men's squad took to the eight-kilometer Montevallo Cross Country Course for the first race of the season. The Bulldogs ran strong, with senior Dillon Dean crossing the line in 24:33.38 to claim the individual title. Freshman Jeb Jones made his presence felt at the front of the field, finishing his first race as a Bulldog in 25:00.12. Ben Garner, Hunter Poole, and Sam Katulich rounded out the scoring for Samford. Â

The women's team broke from the start line, running in a pack formation on the five-kilometer course. Freshmen McKenzie Hogue showed tremendous poise in her first race as a Bulldog, claiming the individual title with a time of 18:07.07. Teammate Mary Grace Strozier posted an 18:14.94, with Katie Strozier and Mary Kellison Thorne finishing sixth and seventh respectively, with times of 18:45.85 and 18:48.35. Lindsey Biggar finished the scoring for the Bulldogs with a time of 19:04.08.

The women's impressive form claimed the top honors at the 2019 Falcon Classic, as the Bulldogs bring home some early-season hardware. The Bulldogs will continue their season September 20, at the 2019 Wingfoot Cross Country Classic in Atlanta, Ga. Â

"I was very pleased with how both teams competed this morning," said head coach Chad Balyo. "We had several significant PB's, and most importantly, built some good momentum to start the season. Dillon and McKenzie looked strong over the last half of the race to pick up the individual wins. I'm excited to work on closing our spread from 1-5, and to get our men's team back to full strength over the next several weeks."
