Women's Basketball Picks Up SoCon Road Win At WCU, 62-50

CULLOWHEE, N.C. –
Samford junior Shauntai Battle scored a career-high 20 points to lead three players in double figures as the Bulldog women's basketball team earned a 62-50 Southern Conference win at Western Carolina Thursday night.
 
The win is the fourth-straight victory for Samford as the Bulldogs improve to 10-11 overall and 5-1 in SoCon play. Western Carolina drops to 3-18 overall and 0-6 in league play.
 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Battle made 7-of-12 shots from the floor in scoring the career-high 20 points.
  • Sarah Myers scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
  • Natalie Armstrong added 10 points and nine rebounds.
  • Western Carolina was led by Andrea Martin Ruiz and Tembre Moates with 14 points each.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Samford jumped out to an early 8-2 lead with 6:26 left in the first quarter after a layup by Battle.
  • Western Carolina fought back to cut the lead to 11-9, and Samford held a 15-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • In the second quarter, Samford built a 24-14 lead with 5:58 left in the period after a layup by Myers.
  • The Catamounts came back to cut the lead to 29-25 heading into the locker room at halftime.
  • Western Carolina pulled into a tie twice in the third quarter.
  • Samford held a 41-40 lead at the end of the third period.
  • Samford built a 47-42 lead with 6:54 left in the fourth quarter after a layup by Armstrong.
  • Western Carolina scored the next five points to tie the score at 47-47, but Samford answered with a 9-1 run to take a 56-48 lead with 1:36 left after a pair of free throws by Armstrong.
  • Samford pulled out the 62-50 win.
