WBB Wins Share Of SoCon Regular-Season Title With 70-53 Win Over WCU

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford women's basketball team earned a share of the program's first Southern Conference regular season title with a 70-53 win over Western Carolina Saturday afternoon in the Pete Hanna Center.


 
With the win, Samford shares the league regular season title with UNCG and Chattanooga. Through the conference tie-breaker, Samford earns the No. 1 seed in next week's SoCon Tournament, and the Bulldogs will take on Western Carolina Thursday at 10 a.m. (CT) in Asheville, N.C.
 
Samford ends the regular season with a mark of 15-14 overall and 10-4 in SoCon play. Western Carolina falls to 5-24 overall and 2-12 in league play.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Samford jumped out to a 16-9 lead with 4:07 left in the first quarter after a pair of free throws by Myers.
  • Samford held a 24-19 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Bulldogs built their lead to 10 points at 31-21 with 5:39 left in the second quarter following two free throws by Brown.
  • Western Carolina answered with a 10-0 run to tie the game at 31-31 with 2:17 left in the period after a jumper by Lauren LaPlant.
  • Samford took a 35-33 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • After Western took a 40-39 lead, Samford went on a 10-0 run to take a 49-40 lead with 3:37 left in the third quarter after two more Myers free throws.
  • WCU fought back to cut the lead to two points at 50-48, but Samford held a 54-49 lead at the end of the third period.
  • In the fourth quarter, Samford pushed its lead out to 12 points at 61-49 after a three-pointer by Shauntai Battle with 6:24 to go in the game.
  • After a WCU three-pointer cut the lead to nine at 61-52, Samford used a 9-1 run to close the game with the 70-53 win.
