Women’s Basketball Earns Fifth-Straight Win, 64-47, At Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. –
The Samford women's basketball team earned its fifth-straight win in a 64-47 Southern Conference victory at Western Carolina Saturday afternoon at the Ramsey Center.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 6-6 overall and 3-0 in Southern Conference play. Western Carolina falls to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in league play.

  • Andrea Cournoyer led Samford with a season-high 20 points and eight rebounds.
  • Audra Leipold scored 15 points for Samford.
  • Makaila Woolard had 11 points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs.
  • Raven Omar dished out seven assists for Samford.
  • Western Carolina was led by Tembre Moates with 16 points.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Samford jumped out to an early 6-2 lead with 6:46 to go in the first quarter after a layup by Annie Ramil.
  • Western Carolina answered with a 13-3 run to take a 15-9 lead with 2:25 left in the first period after a three-pointer by Lauren LaPlant.
  • WCU led, 19-14, at the end of the first quarter.
  • Samford cut the lead to 19-17 with 9:32 left in the second quarter after a three-point play by Woolard.
  • Western Carolina pushed its lead back out to six at 27-21 with 3:42 left in the second period after a three-pointer by Moates.
  • Samford then ended the second quarter with a 7-0 run to take a 28-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • With Samford leading, 30-29, the Bulldogs used a 16-2 run to push their lead to 15 points at 46-31 with 2:41 left in the third quarter after a three-pointer by Cournoyer.
  • Samford led by as many as 16 points in the third quarter, and the Bulldogs held a 50-37 lead at the end of the period.
  • Samford opened the fourth quarter with a 5-0 run to push its lead to 18 points at 55-37 with 8:39 left after a three-pointer by Leipold.
  • The Bulldogs maintained a double-digit lead the entire fourth quarter and finished with the 64-47 win.
