Women’s Basketball Completes Season Sweep Of Furman With 82-55 Win

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford women's basketball team moved into sole possession of first-place in the Southern Conference standings with an 82-55 win over Furman Saturday afternoon at the Pete Hanna Center.
 
With the win, Samford improved to 9-7 overall and 6-1 in Southern Conference play. Furman falls to 5-11 overall and 1-6 in league contests.
 
Samford senior center Natalie Armstrong reached the 500-career rebound mark in the game, making her the 10th player in school history to reach the mark. She now has 1,042 points and 500 rebounds, making her just the fourth player in program history to score at least 1,000 points and grab at least 500 rebounds in their careers.  


 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Andrea Cournoyer scored 28 points to lead Samford, making 10-of-17 shots from the floor and 3-of-5 from three-point range.
  • Armstrong had 17 points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs.
  • Annie Ramil turned in her team-leading fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and 15 rebounds.
  • Mallory Hampton scored 11 points for Samford.
  • Raven Omar had 10 points and seven assists for the Bulldogs.
  • Tierra Hodges led Furman with 18 points in the loss.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Furman jumped out to a 6-0 lead with 7:55 to go in the first quarter after a jumper by Celena Taborn.
  • Samford fought back to cut the lead to two points at 10-8 with 4:58 to go in the opening quarter after a jumper by Cournoyer.
  • Samford tied the game at 15-15 with 2:19 left in the first quarter on a three-pointer by Cournoyer.
  • Furman held a 22-20 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Samford took its first lead of the game at 24-23 with 8:02 left in the second quarter after a pair of free throws by Armstrong.
  • With Samford trailing, 26-25, the Bulldogs went on a 9-1 run to take a 34-27 lead with 2:58 left in the second quarter after a layup by Cournoyer.
  • Samford took a 37-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • Samford opened the third quarter with an 8-2 run to push its lead out to 13 points at 45-32 with 7:08 left in the quarter after a layup by Cournoyer.
  • The Bulldogs held a 58-45 lead at the end of the third quarter.
  • Samford pushed its lead out to 19 points at 64-45 with 8:04 left in the fourth quarter after a jumper by Cournoyer.
  • Samford led by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter and the Bulldogs came away with the 82-55 win.
