BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford junior
Annie Ramil scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds as the Bulldog women's basketball team opened Southern Conference play with a 78-69 win over preseason favorite Mercer Saturday afternoon at the Pete Hanna Center.
With the win, Samford improves to 4-6 overall and 1-0 in SoCon play. Mercer falls to 6-4 overall and 0-1 in league contests.

- Ramil made 11-of-17 shots from the floor, including 2-of-2 from three-point range in reaching her career-high total.
- Andrea Cournoyer had 16 points, six rebounds and four assists for Samford.
- Mallory Hampton produced a career-high 12 points and a career-high eight rebounds for the Bulldogs.
- Natalie Armstrong added nine points and six rebounds for Samford.
- Mercer was led by Jaron Dougherty with 27 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mercer jumped out to an early 8-2 lead with 6:30 to go in the first quarter after a jumper by Amoria Neal-Tysor.
- Samford fought back to tie the score at 12-12 with 2:15 left in the first period following a three-pointer by Raven Omar.
- The teams were tied at 14-14 at the end of the first quarter.
- With Samford leading, 17-16 early in the second quarter, the Bulldogs went on a 10-0 run to take a 27-16 lead with 4:23 to go in the second period after a three-pointer by Hampton.
- Back-to-back Mercer three-pointers cut the lead to 27-22 with 3:13 to go in the second quarter.
- Samford took a 31-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
- Mercer cut the Samford lead to five points at 33-28 with 7:47 to go in the third period after a three-pointer by Jada Lewis.
- The teams traded baskets over the next several minutes.
- Samford built its lead to 14 points at 56-42 with 33 seconds left in the third quarter after two free throws by Armstrong.
- Samford held a 56-45 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
- Mercer cut the lead to seven points at 60-53 with 7:31 left in the fourth quarter after a three-pointer by Dougherty.
- Samford pushed its lead out to 13 points at 70-57 with 2:46 to play in the fourth period following a pair of free throws by Cournoyer.
- Mercer could get no closer than nine points the rest of the way as Samford came away with the 78-69 win.
