Bulldogs Fall To JSU 56-53

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Jacksonville State (2-1) rallied for five points in the final minute of the fourth quarter to claim a 56-53 victory over Samford (1-2) on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at the Pete Hanna Center. Andrea Cournoyer led the Bulldogs and all scorers with 20 points while JSU was paced by Kennedy Gavin's 17 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Gamecocks raced out to a 6-0 lead with 8:13 to play in the first quarter. Kennedy Gavin had all six points for JSU.
  • After falling behind 11-1 to JSU, Samford reeled-off 10 straight over 2:12 to tie the game at 11-11 with 4:04 to go in the opening quarter. Andrea Cournoyer and Shauntai Battle drained 3-pointers while Annie Ramil dropped in a pair of jump hooks in the lane during the stretch.
  • Jacksonville State ended the first quarter on a 7-0 run over the final 2:52 to lead 18-11. Winnie Kiumi had four of the seven for the Gamecocks.
  • JSU had extended its lead to 11, 22-11, before back-to-back baskets by Natalie Armstrong and Cournoyer ended the Gamecocks run with 7:43 to go in the second.
  • The Bulldogs, using a 7-0 spurt over 3:28, cut the deficit to 22-18 at the 4:41 media timeout with a jumper in the lane by freshman center Sussy Ngulefac.
  • Cournoyer's drained a pair of free throws with 2:24 to go in the half to give Samford its first lead of the night, 23-22.
  • After a 3-pointer by JSU's Imari Martin put the Gamecocks up 25-23, a driving lay-up by Samford's Mallory Hampton with 37 seconds on the clock tied the game at the break, 25-25.
  • Samford held the Gamecocks scoreless for 6:23 in the second quarter, allowing the Bulldogs to outscore JSU 14-7 over the period.
  • On the first possession of the third quarter, Battle's lay-up put the Bulldogs up 27-25.
  • Cournoyer's back-to-back jumpers off steals pushed Samford's lead to five, 32-27, and forced JSU's Rick Pietri to burn his first timeout with 8:08 to go in the third.
  • At the under 5:00 media timeout of the third, the Bulldogs maintain a 34-30 advantage.
  • With both teams going more than three minutes without a basket in the third, Samford led 38-36.
  • After holding JSU scoreless for the first 3:05 of the fourth quarter, Gavin knocked down a contested jumper and converted the three-point play to slice the deficit to one, 40-39.
  • Gavin's 10-foot jumper in the paint put the Gamecocks up, 46-45, with 4:58 remaining in the game.
  • Kiana Johnson's jumper extended JSU's lead to five, 50-45, with 3:35 to play.
  • Armstrong's hook in the lane ended a 1:58 drought and cut the deficit to three, 50-47, with 3:14 on the clock.
  • Cournoyer's 23-foot 3-pointer pushed the Bulldogs back out front, 52-51, with 1:46 to go.
  • Nekiyah Thompson's 3-pointer with :55 left gave JSU the lead, 54-53.
  • After a pair of free throws by Gavin, Battle's last second 3-point attempt rattled out to give the Gamecocks the 56-53 win.                  

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Both teams shot less than 40 percent for the game, as Samford finished with 39 percent (20-51) while JSU hit on 32 percent (19-59). The Gamecocks were 13-of-16 at the free throw line with the Bulldogs finishing 9-of-18.
  • Samford out-rebounded Jacksonville State 44-35, but the Gamecocks scored 19 points off of 21 Su turnovers.
  • Cournoyer led Samford and all scorers with 20 points and four rebounds.
  • Armstrong closed the night with nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Battle also finished with nine points while Ngulefac turned in a career high seven points and seven rebounds.
  • Gavin had 17 points and three rebounds to lead JSU. Martin dropped in nine with Thompson and Johnson finishing with seven points apiece.  

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Samford and Jacksonville State were meeting for the 34th time on the hardwood with the Bulldogs owning an 18-16 edge in the series standings. JSU defeated SU, 63-46, on Dec. 16, 2020, in the last meeting between the schools while Samford has won seven of the last 10. 
 
UP NEXT:
  • The Bulldogs begin a four-game road swing at the University of Southern Mississippi on Saturday, Nov. 20. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. at Reed Green Coliseum in Hattiesburg. The game will be broadcast on CUSA-TV+ with John Cox on the call.
