Big Comeback Lifts Women's Basketball To OT Win At North Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. – 
The Samford women's basketball team fought back from a 15-point third-quarter deficit to force overtime and eventually earn a 78-75 overtime win at North Alabama Thursday night at Flowers Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • North Alabama jumped out to an early 6-2 lead with 7:21 to go in the first quarter after a three-pointer by Julia Strachan.
  • Samford answered with an 11-3 run to take a 13-9 lead at the 1:01 mark in the first quarter following two free throws by Andrea Cournoyer.
  • The Bulldogs held a 13-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Samford extended its lead to 16-11 early in the second quarter after a three-pointer by Cournoyer.
  • UNA came back with a 7-0 run to take an 18-16 lead with 7:21 left in the second period after a layup by Tiahna Sears.
  • With the game tied at 18-18, UNA went on a 9-0 run to take a 27-18 lead, and UNA held a 29-20 lead at halftime.
  • Samford scored the first five points of the third quarter to cut the lead to 29-25 with 8:12 to go in the period after a jumper by Sussy Ngulefac.
  • UNA, however, went on an 11-0 run to push its lead to 15 points at 40-25 at the 4:27 mark in the third quarter after a three-pointer by Jade Moore.
  • A strong finish to the quarter by the Bulldogs cut the lead to 43-32 at the end of the third quarter on a layup by Ngulefac at the buzzer.
  • Samford opened the fourth quarter on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to 45-42 with 7:31 left after a layup by Kathleen Wheeler.
  • The Bulldogs eventually closed to within two points at 46-44, but UNA went on an 8-0 run to take a 54-44 lead with 4:15 to go after a three-pointer by Strachan.
  • Samford then scored the next six points to cut the lead to 54-50 with 2:54 to go after a layup by Ngulefac.
  • The Bulldogs tied the game at 58-58 on a three-point play by Annie Ramil with 1:11 to go.
  • The teams ended regulation tied at 60-60, forcing overtime.
  • In overtime, Samford jumped out to a 66-62 lead with 4:14 to go after a three-point play by Ngulefac.
  • The Bulldogs built their lead to six points at 72-66 with 1:03 to go.
  • UNA came back to cut the lead to one point at 76-75 with four seconds to go, but two late free throws by Cournoyer sealed the 78-75 Samford win.

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Cournoyer led Samford with 24 points.
  • Ngulefac had 14 points for the Bulldogs.
  • Ramil posted a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds. The 16 rebounds tied a career high for Ramil.
  • Shauntai Battle added 10 points for Samford.
  • Wheeler had nine points and a career-high eight rebounds.
  • North Alabama was led by Strachan with 24 points.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • This was the third all-time regular season meeting between the programs, with Samford holding a 3-0 series lead.
  • In the fourth quarter and overtime combined, Samford outscored UNA, 46-32.
