Women’s Basketball Uses Strong Second Half To Pull Away For 70-44 Win Over UNCG

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford women's basketball team used a strong second half to break open a close game on its way to a 70-44 win over UNCG Saturday afternoon in the Pete Hanna Center.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 11-7 overall and 8-1 in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs remain in first place in the league standings. UNCG falls to 4-14 overall and 2-7 in SoCon play.


 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Annie Ramil led the Bulldogs with 18 points and nine rebounds, narrowly missing her seventh double-double of the season.
  • Andrea Cournoyer scored 16 points for Samford.
  • Natalie Armstrong added 14 points for the Bulldogs.
  • Mallory Hampton dished out six assists for Samford, while Raven Omar had five assists.
  • UNCG was led by Cece Crudup with 17 points.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UNCG jumped out to an early 9-2 lead with 7:05 left in the first quarter following a basket by Crudup.
  • Samford cut the lead to 9-6 with 4:40 left in the quarter after a layup by Makaila Woolard.
  • UNCG held a 13-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Samford scored the first six points of the second quarter to take a 14-13 lead with 7:33 to go in the period after a layup by Cournoyer.
  • With Samford trailing, 18-16, the Bulldogs scored five-straight points to take a 21-18 lead with 4:30 left in the second quarter after a layup off a steal by Hampton.
  • Samford took a 25-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • Samford opened the third quarter with a 9-0 run to take a 34-24 lead with 6:32 left in the period after a layup by Armstrong.
  • Samford led by as many as 18 points in the third quarter, and the Bulldogs held a 44-26 lead at the end of the period.
  • The Bulldogs pushed their lead out to 23 points at 50-27 with 9:06 left in the fourth quarter following a three-pointer by Armstrong.
  • UNCG answered with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 50-34 with 6:23 left after a pair of free throws by Khalis Cain.
  • Samford then went on a 10-0 run to push its lead out to 26 points at 60-34 with 4:45 left after a layup by Armstrong.
  • Samford led by as many as 30 points and the Bulldogs came away with the 70-44 victory.

  • Samford will travel to Spartanburg, S.C., to take on the Wofford Terriers Thursday, Feb. 11. The game is set for a 6 p.m. (CT) start.
