SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford sophomore safety Chris Edmonds and junior place-kicker Mitchell Fineran earned weekly honors from the Southern Conference when the league released its weekly football awards Monday afternoon.
 
Edmonds was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week for the second-straight week, while Fineran earned Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
 
Edmonds caused two key turnovers in the second half to help the Bulldog football team hold on for a 37-31 win over No. 20 Wofford Saturday afternoon. With 2:59 left in the third quarter and Wofford driving in Samford territory, Edmonds picked off a Wofford pass and returned it 22 yards to the Samford 37-yard line, ending the Wofford threat. Then, with 12:31 left in the fourth quarter on a long Wofford run, Edmonds forced a fumble that teammate Hakeem Johnson recovered, ending another Terrier threat. For the game, Edmonds finished with eight total tackles, including four solo stops.  
 
Fineran turned in a big day in Saturday's win. Fineran made field goals from 41, 40 and 35 yards out. He kicked a 41-yard field goal to tie the score at 17-17 in the second quarter. In the fourth quarter, he kicked a 35-yard field goal and a 40-yard field goal to give Samford a 37-24 lead. Fineran was also 4-for-4 on extra-point attempts, and he handled kickoffs for Samford, averaging 54.1 yards on eight kickoffs, producing four touchbacks.  
 
Samford will play host to the VMI Keydets Saturday, March 20. The game is set for a 12 p.m. start from Seibert Stadium.
