Two Samford Alums To Compete In Olympic Trials

EUGENE, Ore. – Former Samford track standouts Karisa Nelson and Tray Oates will compete in the Olympic Trials this weekend at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Nelson will compete in the women's 1,500-meter run, while Oates is set to compete in the men's pole vault.
The first round for the women's 1,500-meter run is scheduled for tonight at 6:03 p.m. (CT) on NBC Sports Network, with the finals for the event set for Monday at 7:05 p.m. (CT) also on NBCSN.
The men's pole vault will have qualifying Saturday at 6:30 p.m. (CT), and the finals for the event are scheduled for Monday at 5:30 p.m. (CT). To watch the live stream of the pole vault, click here: LIVE STREAM. The top three finishers in each event qualify for the U.S. Olympic team.

Oates competed in the Olympic Trials in 2016, reaching the finals and finishing fourth. Oates holds the Samford record for the indoor pole vault at 5.63 meters (18' 6.5"), and the outdoor pole vault with a jump of 5.66 meters (18' 6.75").
Nelson earned the program's first NCAA Division I national title, winning the indoor mile in 2017. Nelson holds the school's indoor records for the 800 meters (2:05.87), mile (4:31.24) and 3,000 meters (9:15.34). She also owns outdoor records in the 800 meters (2:07.14), 1,500 meters (4:06.14) and the mile (4:32.31).
The two former Bulldogs join current Samford student-athlete Justin Stuckey, who will compete in the high jump next Friday, June 25.
