Oates And Nelson Compete At Olympic Trials

EUGENE, Ore. – Former Samford track stars Tray Oates and Karisa Nelson competed in the Olympic Trials Saturday evening at historic Hayward Field.
Oates finished 17th in the pole vault in the qualifying round, with just the top 12 advancing to Sunday's finals. Nelson placed 10th in the first semifinal of the 1500 meters, with the top five in each semifinal advancing to Monday night's finals.
On the first height of 5.40 meters (17-8.5), Oates failed on his first attempt, but cleared the height on his second try. He cleared the second height of 5.50 meters (18-0.5) on his first attempt. He was then unable to clear the third height of 5.60 meters (18-4.5).
Nelson ran the 1500 meters in 4:15.40, placing 10th in the first semifinal. Nelson advanced to the semifinals with her time of 4:13.98 in Friday night's first round.
Current Samford star Justin Stuckey will compete in the high jump at the Olympic Trials, with the preliminaries set for Friday, June 25, at 5 p.m. (CT). The finals for the event are scheduled for Sunday, June 27, at 3:30 p.m. (CT).
