GAME NOTES--SAMFORD VS. CHATTANOOGA (PDF)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford women's basketball team (5-9, 0-0 SoCon) will open Southern Conference play by hosting Chattanooga (2-14, 0-1 SoCon) Monday at 6 p.m. in the Pete Hanna Center with Blake Gardner (PBP), Emily London Swaim (Color) and Eric Biancalana (Sideline) calling the action.
- Samford and Chattanooga are meeting for the 36th time, with Chattanooga holding a 26-9 series lead. Last season, the teams split the two meetings, both at Chattanooga. Samford won the first game, 71-60, and Chattanooga came back to take game two by a score of 70-57.
- Samford last played on Dec. 30, when the Bulldogs overcame a 15-point third quarter deficit to force overtime and eventually earn a 78-75 win at North Alabama. Andrea Cournoyer led Samford with 24 points in the win. Sussy Ngulefac had 14 points, while Annie Ramil posted a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds. Shauntai Battle added 10 points for the Bulldogs.
- Samford and Chattanooga were originally scheduled to play last Thursday, Jan. 6, but the game had to be postponed and rescheduled for Monday evening due to COVID protocols.
- Chattanooga is coming off a 69-52 loss at Mercer on Jan. 8. Amaria Pugh led Chattanooga with 17 points in the loss. Destiny McClendon tallied nine points for the Mocs.
- Chattanooga is averaging 58.8 points per game entering Monday's contest, while giving up 72.9 points per game.
- Chattanooga is led in scoring by Abbey Cornelius, averaging 13.7 points per game. Cornelius also leads the team in rebounding, grabbing 9.4 boards per contest. Dena Jarrells is scoring 9.6 points per game for the Mocs. Jarrells also leads the squad in assists, dishing out 3.1 assists per game.
- Andrea Cournoyer comes into Monday night's game leading the SoCon in scoring at 17.8 points per game while also leading in both steals (3.1) per game and in free throw percentage (.900).
- Samford recently wrapped up its non-conference schedule, posting a 5-9 mark. The Bulldogs played an incredibly tough out of conference slate, including games against Power 5 programs Iowa, Colorado, Ole Miss and LSU.
- The Bulldogs are 5-0 when scoring 75 or more points in a game so far this season.
- Samford is averaging 61.9 points per game to rank third in the SoCon. The Bulldogs are also sixth in scoring defense at 70.4 points allowed per contest.
- Since joining the Southern Conference in 2008, Samford has posted a record of 131-84 in league games. Against the current members of the SoCon, Samford has an all-time record of 115-82. Samford's all-time record against each current SoCon school is: Chattanooga (9-26), ETSU (9-7), Furman (17-13), Mercer (9-19), UNCG (21-7), Western Carolina (25-4) and Wofford (25-6).
- Sussy Ngulefac (6-3, Fr., F) has made 66.7 percent of her shots so far this season, which currently leads the Southern Conference. The Lilburn, Ga., native, continues to grow as an inside threat for the Bulldogs, averaging 7.7 points and 4.6 rebounds. She scored a career-high 18 points and grabbed a career-high eight rebounds at LSU, earning Southern Conference Player of the Week honors for her efforts.
- Sanaa Redmond enters the week third in the league in assists at 3.0 per game. The freshman from Philadelphia, Pa., had a career-high nine assists in the Bulldogs' win over Montevallo.
- The Bulldogs are shooting 40.9 percent from the floor to rank first in the SoCon. Samford has made 324-of-792 attempts so far this season. Sussy Ngulefac leads the way shooting 66.7 percent.
- Shauntai Battle is averaging 7.7 points per game to tie for 19th in the SoCon with teammate Sussy Ngulefac. She also ranks seventh in 3-point FG made per game (1.4) as well.
- Preseason All-SoCon selection and junior forward Annie Ramil has been a force on the boards, averaging 7.0 rebounds per game, ranking eighth in the league. She tied a career-high with 16 in the recent win at North Alabama.
- Mallory Hampton is off to a good start this season, ranking 10th in the SoCon in assists per game (2.4).
- As a team, Samford has done a good job of defending the three-point shot so far this season. The Bulldogs have limited their opponents to just 29.0 percent from beyond the arc, ranking third in the Southern Conference.
- In the previous 13 seasons in the Southern Conference, Samford has a record of 7-6 in the team's SoCon openers. Under head coach Carley Kuhns, Samford is 2-0 in SoCon openers, including a 78-69 win over Mercer last season. Samford and Chattanooga have met in the Bulldogs' SoCon opener three times, and Samford is 1-2 in those games.
