BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –The Samford Bulldog Club held its Eighth Annual Samford Classic presented by Alabama Power, fundraiser and golf tournament last Monday, Oct. 10, at Shoal Creek Club.
The Samford Classic raises funds to benefit Samford's more than 390 student-athletes and 17 athletic teams. Over the eight-year history of the event, more than $1.7 million dollars has been raised.
The field for the event is capped at 72 players, and this is the eighth-straight year the tournament has been sold out. This year's tournament raised $226,000.
"Over the eight-year history of the Samford Classic, this event has consistently been one of the premier golf outings and fundraisers in the state," Samford Director of Athletics Martin Newton said. "I am thankful for the work of our incredible volunteers, staff and the good people at Shoal Creek Club. To be able to host the event at such a prestigious venue, with the unique format and the fantastic gifts are the keys to the tournament's success. This tournament would not be possible without the support of our sponsors and players, and I want to thank each of them for their continued support of Samford Athletics."
Over $72,000 in hole gifts and prizes were awarded at the event. The winning foursome in the tournament was Marc Salyers, Josh Petty, Glen Marts and Doug Rawson. Bear Burnett won $1,500 in the Samford Classic Putting Challenge.
